Panormus. Dalla città tutto porto alla città percorso. Strategie di spatial design per la costa sud di Palermo

Do places belonging to the urban identity keep their role as times goes by? Can the memory of their features create codes in order to get that identity back? Nowadays more than half of the world population dwells and works within a urban settlement. Cities are getting more and more dense and rarefied, metropolitan and reticulated, experiencing expansion or contraction. Cities play a responsibility role, since they create new and innovative lifestyles which are sustainable, intelligent and creative, thus becoming the reformers of their own development pattern. The main factors which contribute to the urban development are those which can attract people and activity through identity, creativity and innovation, in order to stimulate new economies and civic values. This thesis aims at individuating those project strategies which are able to give quality back to the common goods of the city, through the study of the history and the identity of the place in object. Palermo is the centre of the research: a Mediterranean city with a thousand-year old history. Throughout the centuries, its history has been influenced by numerous cultures and traditions: from the Sicanians to the Carthaginians, the Byzantines and the Normans. It is a city characterized by a unique cultural heritage which underwent a radical morphological change between the 70s and the 80s, when the Sack of Palermo took place: it is considered as a destruction of the city, which has made clear that it is impossible for the artistic intelligence and the administration to perform an intervention in favor of the development of the spaces of the city. A voyage across the principles of spatial design and landscape design, whose destination is the synthesis of the identities of the place in object, through the analysis of its past and future identites, in order to discover its hidden identity, which is the origin of the project.

I luoghi dell’identità urbana e sociale restano così nel tempo? Può la memoria dei suoi caratteri creare codici al fine di recuperare tale identità? Oggi più della metà della popolazione mondiale abita e lavora in un insediamento urbano. Le città risultano essere sempre più dense e rarefatte, metropolitane e reticolare, in espansione o in contrazione. La città ricopre sempre di più un ruolo di responsabilità perché generatrice di stili di vita nuovi e innovativi, sostenibili, intelligenti e creativi, diventando essa stessa riformatrice del proprio modello di sviluppo. Fattori fondamentali per lo sviluppo urbano sono tutte le forze che possano rendere la città attrattrice di popolazione e attività attraverso l’identità, la creatività e l’innovazione e che siano generatrici di nuove economie e promotrici di virtù civiche. Il progetto di tesi mira a individuare delle linee guida e delle strategie di progetto capaci di riportare qualità ai beni comuni della città, attraverso lo studio della storia del luogo e della sua identità. Palermo è il focus della ricerca: città del mediterraneo con una storia millenaria alle spalle. La sua storia nel corso dei secoli appare attraversata da una moltitudine di culture e tradizioni: dai Sicani ai Cartaginesi, ai Bizantini, fino ai Normanni. Una città con un retaggio culturale unico e irripetibile, che tra gli anni Sessanta-Settanta del novecento ha subìto un radicale cambiamento morfologico con il “Sacco di Palermo”, considerato un vero e proprio assassinio del territorio, e che ha reso lampante l’impossibilità di un intervento da parte delle intelligenze artistiche e delle amministrazioni sulla costruzione dello spazio della città. Un viaggio attraverso quelli che sono i principi dello spatial design e del landscape design, che ha come punto di arrivo la sintesi delle identità del luogo in questione, attraverso l’analisi delle identità passate e delle identità future al fine di scoprire l’identità celata generatrice del progetto.
