In the 21st century we won’t experience 100 years, but the equivalent 20,000 years of technological progress (Kurzweil, 2001). With this thesis project, I wanted to explore how humans are reacting to this constant, rapid stream of technological advancement, and the impact that design has in this relationship. Increasingly, as designers, we have a central role in materialising technology into human-centered products and experiences. But how often do we take a critical approach to our creative contributions to the progressive weaving of technology into the fabric of society and of human life? Inspired by the methodology of Speculative and Critical Design, I ran two workshops that probed the participants’ beliefs, values, worries and fears about technology and its applications, leading to the identification of three key insights and relative design opportunities. OUT / SMART is the resulting speculative concept: a grassroots activist community that by asking “are we still smarter than ‘smart’?” provides an alternative to the blind acceptance of technology but without necessarily rejecting it altogether: instead it crowdsources ways to identify and exploit the innate weaknesses of technologies, thus allowing its members to reclaim the feeling of being in control of their private spaces thanks to “hacks” with which they can shield themselves at an individual level. This thesis is first and foremost a speculative design reflection, which confirmed and amplified my belief in the need for us designers to become more aware of our crucial role in the relationship between humans and technology and of its ethical implications; and of the very contemporary necessity of projects that stimulate discussion, reflection and critique, and most of all provide alternatives.

Abstract
This thesis is first and foremost a speculative design reflection, which confirmed and amplified my belief in the need for us designers to become more aware of our crucial role in the relationship between humans and technology and of its ethical implications; and of the very contemporary necessity of projects that stimulate discussion, reflection and critique, and most of all provide alternatives.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
