The thesis focused on air pollution and the related damages which it brings to human health, if inhaled. After an analysis of pollution causes, consequences, and possible measures that can be implemented to reduce human exposure to pollution, the aim was to design a device that improves air quality in those contexts, particularly indoors, where air pollution is present but is not perceivable. In particular, the thesis started with an analysis of anti-pollution mask, as the most widespread pollution protection device. Through a specific survey, and through the general theory of risk perception, specifically declined to the perception of environmental risk, it was concluded that in contexts such as Europe, where the problem of pollution is real, but is little perceived, the mask constitutes an invasive and not accettable solution. On the basis of these results, the design brief therefore was to imagine a non-invasive and user-friendly product, which requires the user the minimum effort possible in terms of maintenance. In this regard it has been used an existing technology, called "corona discharge", which uses air ionization to remove some specific class of pollutants, and which allowed to imagine a non-invasive product that is not to be worn. In addition, the technology chosen does not impose any replacement of filters, nor any fan for air movement. The result is a compact and portable product, which can be used in various situations, especially indoors, (to be placed for example on the desk or on the bedside table, used during train or car trips, orientating it towards the airways), and that limits the users’ exposure to typical indoor pollutants, without requiring other "effort" than recharging the battery. As a sort of compact and easy to transport packaging, there is also an independent sensor for particulate matter detection, which communicates (via Bluetooth) to the smartphone the real time exposure to PM, thus suggesting to the user when to activate the ionizer. This project does not constitute a solution to the general problem of pollution, a goal that is up to States and Institutions and that should be solved "upstream", worldwide. It arises instead as solution "downstream", as a device that seeks to limit user exposure to certain pollutants. It is not a medical device but a tool that generally improves the quality of air you breathe in confined environments.

Abstract
The thesis focused on air pollution and the related damages which it brings to human health, if inhaled. After an analysis of pollution causes, consequences, and possible measures that can be implemented to reduce human exposure to pollution, the aim was to design a device that improves air quality in those contexts, particularly indoors, where air pollution is present but is not perceivable. In particular, the thesis started with an analysis of anti-pollution mask, as the most widespread pollution protection device. It arises instead as solution "downstream", as a device that seeks to limit user exposure to certain pollutants.
