Beyond surfaces. Architectural features of gentrification in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin

Urban contexts in which social, economic and constructed changes have seen an improvement at the local neighbourhood level are often associated with the English word "gentrification". Long-studied, especially from the Anglophone literature, the research about this area has with emphasis analysed the economic and social issues, leaving out the improvements that gentrification has made at the architecture of buildings and spaces of the neighbourhood level. With the intention to deepen an aspect openly evident, yet scientifically dark of this phenomenon, the text analyses the changes in the district of Prenzlauer Berg, in former East Berlin. In order to make the reasons for the changes easier to understand, a historical description, which involves researching the origins of the neighbourhood to the present day, is shown in the opening chapters of the book. The corpus of text instead presents a detailed analysis of the architectural changes that occurred, the macro scale to that of the detail, and the economic and social dynamics that have led to these changes. The script is enriched with historical and contemporary evidences including the use of photography, which seeks to compare the different statuses of buildings during the various stages of gentrification.

I contesti urbani in cui i cambiamenti sociali, economici e del costruito hanno visto un miglioramento al livello locale di quartiere sono spesso associati alla parola inglese “gentrification”. A lungo studiata, soprattutto dalla letteratura anglofona, le ricerche in merito a questo ambito hanno con particolare attenzione analizzato le questioni economiche e sociali, tralasciando invece le migliorie che la gentrification ha apportato all’architettura degli edifici e degli spazi del quartiere. Con l’intento quindi di approfondire un aspetto apertamente evidente, ma allo stesso tempo scientificamente oscuro di questo fenomeno, il testo analizza i cambiamenti del quartiere di Prenzlauer Berg, nella vecchia Berlino Est. Al fine di rendere più comprensibili i motivi delle trasformazioni, un percorso storico, che prevede la ricerca delle origini del quartiere fino ai giorni nostri, è illustrato nei capitoli iniziali del volume. Il corpus del testo invece presenta un’analisi dettagliata delle trasformazioni architettoniche avvenute, dalla scala macro fino a quella del dettaglio, e le dinamiche economiche e sociali che hanno condotto a questi cambiamenti. Lo scritto si arricchisce di testimonianze storiche e contemporanee anche tramite l’uso della fotografia, che cerca di confrontare i diversi status degli edifici durante i vari stadi della gentrification.
