The thesis presented in this paper stems from the competition announcement published by the international platform Arquitectum. It provided for the creation of a floating toy museum in the port of Amsterdam (Oosterdok). Starting from the competition announcement, from the information obtained in first person (through inspections) and from preliminary studies we have designed a building that was able, through the preservation and exposure, to put in contact each age group to the theme of the game and toy. We have created a place where knowledge is combined with the fun; traditional exhibition halls alternate with roofs that, with their geometry and aesthetics, go to connote a specific theme and immerse adults and children in a parallel world. The specific location of the project site has conditioned in part the development of our thesis both aesthetically and technically. First, the museum is part of a context in which there is a high density of cultural activities (eg. the NEMO) with which must relate and secondly acts as a link between the historical center and residential areas. All this has influenced the aesthetics of the museum, which seeks to fuse inside the main styles that have characterized the Dutch culture and the two previously mentioned areas. Also in Amsterdam personalities in architecture and engineering world show a keen interest in the development and use of 3D printing. This, in addition to our curiosity, has pushed us to employ this technology for the realization of the internal shield. Taking advantage approach for the management of complex projects has led to the definition of the concept for which he has elaborated the filter element form. This was then optimized using parametric design software (Grasshopper, Galapagos, Honeybee, etc.) which have allowed us to obtain the best balance between aesthetics, mechanical behavior and filtering function. In parallel, we have evaluated the methods of production, transport, storage, assembly of the piece with their relative cost and time. Finally the creation of a floating structure has required a study on the legislation (“Codice della Navigazione nel Titolo V”) and on the types of floating structures. This was followed by the verification of stability and balance of the building under static and dynamic conditions. All this has been possible only as a result of the evaluation of the weight of the supporting structure, technology packages and systems.
