The following thesis represents a good operational overview on what I have learned during my university career concerning the study of an historic building, finalized to a structural recovery and to an energetic and functional improvement: to the application of solutions that can consolidate the bearing system of the construction, the insertion of elements in structural glass comes abreast, being this a particularly fascinating material in its expressive potential and its mysterious and sometimes unforeseeable abilities. Conventionally used for its elevated transparency, the glass cannot be sure considered an element with a discreet and imperceptible presence: contrarily, its insertion into an environment involves a strong characterization of the spaces that, in the case of a historical building in stone and wood, it denotes a remarkable stylistic separation. In this way I have intentionally appealed to the glass like plan material: with the objective to make the dwelling a place made-to-measure for its inhabitants, engineers and artists at the same time. The job is articulated in four macros dissects in which the fundamental topics for the drawing up of the plan are faced. Context analysis : it is important to know in detailed way all the characteristics of the place in which the building joins so that every single information can address the choices in phase of plan. I have looked for news regarding the history of the country (useful in order to comprise that one of the dwelling), the geomorphological characteristics of the land (in order to understand of the static behavior) and the climatic data of the zone (in order to hold in consideration the wind in structural phase or the solar radiation in energetic within). Not to underrate, moreover, the prescription dictated by the local and regional Plans. Building analysis : from the wider scale it is necessary to come down to a specific analysis of the fabric with the objective to know of the volumetric conformation, the history and the state of conservation. For this a metric relief is executed, one of the materials, one of the degradations and one of the leaks, fundamental in order to denounce eventual movements of the structure, of the past or under development. Material study : for being able to plan every single element with rigor and knowledge, it is important to know in groundbreaking way the material chosen for the construction, in its physical, chemical, mechanical and energy characteristics. Structural consolidation project : after all the preliminary studies, it is possible to advance every type of proposal that resolves the structural problems and that improve the inhabited conditions from the distributive, functional and aesthetic point of view. By the structural point of view, some rather conventional solutions of static consolidation are proposed, like the insertion of pile foundations, for the reinforcement of the foundations, or the realization of armed plasters, for the stiffening of the stoneworks. Moreover, frame elements, composed by pillars and beams in stratified glass, are inserted in order to make a support for the floors. In this way it has been necessary to execute a specific study for being able to determine the resistant minimal thickness of the elements. As it regards the housing comfort, some variations of the functional distribution are proposed to allowing the insertion of a second hygienic service and a “well of light” built with glass that, thanks to a vertical burglary from the roof to the ground floor, guarantees best conditions of light in all the inside spaces. In order to complete the treatment, sight the particularitity of the material (particularly breakable, cumbersome and heavy),it is executed a deepening of the construction site of the plan with the objective to estimate the feasibility and to resolve eventual logistic problems dictated from the planimetric conformation of the country, characterized from drawn closer constructions and narrow alleys, not suitable for vehicles.
