Along with the characteristics of modernity, urban development and spatial transformation are undergoing a sequence of processes. Not only is it expressed through political regime, economic system, ideological culture and literary arts, but also is it improved by the condition of industrialisation, modernisation, urbanisation, secularisation, public participation and structural differentiation. City is as a physical example of research on modernity, in addition to its characteristics by political, economy, culture and artistic fields, it represents the interrelationship between human beings and spatial organisation, and its self-development is driven by the external factors, particularly under the disciplines of modern, modernism, postmodern, postmodernism, those are rather a continuous and refining process of development and transformation of the city and urban space. This thesis is specifically working on the topic of urban space and spatial transformation from modern to postmodern period, from the construction of ideal urban planning by modernism to the opponent attitude raised by postmodernism, from the large-scale and efficiency-based city to the refined and human-oriented urban spaces. Taking Hong Kong as an example, to exemplify the process of urban development and spatial transformation, and to figure out the recognition of urban space in the period of postmodern.

Abstract
Along with the characteristics of modernity, urban development and spatial transformation are undergoing a sequence of processes.
