Stratificazioni storiche a confronto. Un progetto di regenerazione per la Rocca del Volterraio

The “Rocca del Volterraio” is a fortress located in the Eastern part of Isola d’Elba, dominating the entire gulf of the Portoferraio municipality. The Rocca has been used for centuries and by different populations, not only as a shelter against pirate incursions, but also as a lookout on the coast of the island towards the continent. In the 19th century, however, the stronghold started being disused, following the end of political tensions within the island and the consequent reunification of Isola d’Elba in a single State. After two centuries of abandonment, currently the Rocca del Volterraio presents itself with a perfect preservation of its defensive wall, part of its watchtower and of the walkways located around the walls. Whereas , what remains of the interior of the fortress are the cobblestones – which allow the distinction between the garrison and the watchman’s dwelling – as well as the related common spaces, like the oven and the well. Following an evaluation accomplished between 1992 and 1993, works for the conservative restoration of the archaeological artefact – whose aim is to make the visit of the castle as safe as possible for tourists – were recently started, releasing the building from vegetation and decay and allowing the identification of both historical layering and defensive adjustments, typical of the fortress’ evolution. The architectural aim presented in this dissertation is to contribute to the stratification process of the Rocca del Volterraio as regards our time. This objective would be put into practice constructing new buildings around the artefact, but also adjustments around the symbols of the fortress – i.e. the tower partly collapsed and then reconstructed and the walls, to which two newly founded bastions were added. The selection of materials retraced the architectural tradition already present in the state of art of the military outpost – i.e. suggesting the use of stone – though featuring the introduction of a new interpretation in contrast with the past: the only exception is related to the reconstruction of the watchtower, which would be put into practice through planed wood panels, aiming at emphasizing the different procedural approach carried out in this part of the project. The project intentionally exceeded the conservative aim of the Volterraio, suggesting a new employment of the area, which goes beyond its role as historical heritage: the conversion of the building into a luxury tourist accommodation. This would allow an all-year usage of the fortress.

La rocca del Volterraio è una fortificazione situata nel settore orientale dell’Isola d’Elba, a dominare l’intero golfo del comune di Portoferraio. Utilizzata continuativamente per diversi secoli e da diverse popolazioni, da rifugio contro le scorrerie dei pirati sino a posto di vedetta sulla costa dell’isola verso il continente, cade in disuso nel XIX secolo in seguito alla riunificazione dell’intero territorio Elbano in un unico stato, conseguentemente alla cessazione delle tensioni politiche vigenti sull’isola. Dopo due secoli di abbandono, oggi la Rocca del Volterraio ha conservato il circolo murario difensivo, in parte la sua torre di avvistamento ed i camminamenti intorno alle mura, mentre sono rimasti soltanto i selciati di fondazione di quasi tutti gli edifici presenti all’interno della fortificazione, permettendo comunque il riconoscimento dell’abitazione della guarnigione e del castellano, oltre ai relativi spazi di pertinenza come il forno ed il pozzo. In seguito ad un rilievo eseguito tra il 1992 e il 1993 sono stati recentemente iniziati i lavori per un restauro conservativo del manufatto archeologico, al fine di poter rendere possibile la sua visita in sicurezza, liberandolo dalla vegetazione e dal degrado, rendendo leggibili le stratificazioni storiche e gli adeguamenti difensivi che hanno caratterizzato l’evoluzione della rocca. L’intento architettonico è quello di contribuire per quanto riguardi la nostra epoca al processo di stratificazione storica della rocca del Volterraio, non ricostruendo i volumi crollati all’interno del circolo murario ma aggiungendo al manufatto nuovi edifici ed adeguamenti intorno agli elementi considerati identificativi della rocca, quali la torre parzialmente crollata e ricostruita e le mura, a cui sono stati aggiunti due bastioni di nuova fondazione. La scelta dei materiali ha voluto ricalcare la tradizione costruttiva già presente nello stato di fatto dell’avamposto militare, quindi proponendo l’utilizzo della pietra, seppur con l’accortezza di un diverso taglio rispetto a quella storica: unica eccezione a questa scelta architettonica riguarda la nuova realizzazione della torre di avvistamento, realizzata con un tamponamento in pannelli lignei al fine di denotare il differente approccio progettuale rilevato in questa parte di progetto. L’obbiettivo progettuale ha voluto sopravanzare l’intento conservativo del Volterraio, suggerendo un nuovo utilizzo che gli permettesse di avere uno scopo altro rispetto alla sola, pur importante, testimonianza storica che rappresenta; l’inserimento di una struttura ricettiva di lusso in tal senso intende permettere alla rocca un utilizzo delle sue parti in tutte le fasi dell’anno.
