The background of our dissertation is the innovation field and, in particular, the design-driven one. Moreover, our intention is to explore how tradition participates to innovation. In particular, we intend to focus on family businesses, since they are the most suitable organizational form to value tradition in innovation process. Some of these firms, during their lifetime, alternated phases of family and non-family corporate governance. However, no literature study has been carried out about how family firms manage innovation through tradition, nor how different governance profiles influence this approach. The goal of our investigation will consist in filling these gaps. Moreover, we focused on design-intensive firms, since design is the focal object of their activities. In order to provide concrete evidence to our research, we relied on a case study methodology. Indeed, we selected two Italian firms from the design furniture sector, B&B Italia and Cassina SpA. Through the creation of three Design Tradition Indicators, we investigated the modalities in which these firms innovate through tradition. In order to do that, it was necessary to individuate those products that belong to the tradition asset of the company. For this reason, we introduced Design Paths, namely sets of products that show common stylistic, visual, functional and meaning elements. After that, in order to understand the influence of family corporate governance on innovation through tradition, we introduced three Corporate Governance Variables. These were used to compare the values assumed by Design Tradition Indicators under different governance systems through the use of t-test. From the performed analyses, we firstly confirmed the importance of the tradition role in innovation; secondly, we stated that different firm ownerships usually involve a change in the management of innovation process. In particular, during the periods of non-family direction of the firm, the company relies more on traditional knowledge. This happens because, while the family presence is enough to maintain the firm cultural identity, the absence of it involves that the company relies on tradition to affirm its values.

Abstract
The background of our dissertation is the innovation field and, in particular, the design-driven one. Moreover, our intention is to explore how tradition participates to innovation. In particular, we intend to focus on family businesses, since they are the most suitable organizational form to value tradition in innovation process. Some of these firms, during their lifetime, alternated phases of family and non-family corporate governance. However, no literature study has been carried out about how family firms manage innovation through tradition, nor how different governance profiles influence this approach.
