In spite of the advancements made recently in the field of seismic engineering, the issues related to the spatial variability of ground motion as well as to the vertical input, with respect to the horizontal one, have not been fully explored especially in relation to their effect on the dynamic response of civil engineering structures. It is widely recognized that vertical ground motion may be comparable or even significantly higher than the horizontal one in the near-source region. Heavy damages to extended lifeline structures such as pipelines, bridges etc. is attributed to spatial variation of ground motion. The present study aims at promoting researches on the importance of vertical seismic input and spatial variability of ground motions for earthquake-resistant design and analysis of structures, especially in the near-source region of earthquakes. The seismic response of a real bridge structure, namely, the Humboldt Middle Channel Bay Bridge, in California (USA) has been taken into account, considering as seismic loading the real ground motions recorded during the 28 September 2004 (Mw 6.0) Parkfield earthquake at UPSAR dense array. Various dynamic analyses of the Humboldt Bay Bridge structure have been performed under different assumptions regarding the input ground motion and the structural model.
Nonostante i progressi fatti recentemente nel campo dell'ingegneria sismica, le problematiche legate alla variabilità spaziale del moto del suolo nelle sue componenti verticale e orizzontale, non sono state completamente esplorate soprattutto in relazione al loro effetto sulla risposta dinamica di strutture di ingegneria civile. È ampiamente riconosciuto che il movimento verticale può essere paragonabile o addirittura significativamente superiore a quello orizzontale nella regione vicino alla sorgente. Gravi danni a infrastrutture quali tubazioni, ponti, ecc. vanno attribuiti alla variazione spaziale del moto del suolo. Il presente studio mira a promuovere ricerche sull'importanza dell’input sismico verticale e sulla variabilità spaziale del moto del suolo per la progettazione e l'analisi di strutture antisismiche, specialmente nella regione vicino alla sorgente dei terremoti. La risposta sismica di una vera e propria struttura a ponte, vale a dire, il ponte “Humboldt Middle Channel Bay Bridge”, in California (USA) è stata presa in considerazione, considerando come carico sismico i movimenti reali del terreno registrati durante il terremoto di Parkfield (UPSAR dense array) avvenuto il 28 settembre 2004 (Mw 6.0). Varie analisi dinamiche della struttura “Humboldt Bay Bridge” sono state eseguite sotto diverse ipotesi riguardanti il moto del suolo in ingresso e il modello strutturale.
