Art mill : un nuovo museo per Doha

Art Mill is a new Museum in Doha. The first project’s aim was the integration with other museums and with the city, taking advantage of the spectacular site reserved for the project, with three of the four sides adjoining Doha Bay. Then we examined the fascinating legacy left by the industrial process of milling in the project site, notably the rhythmic and large space of vertical Silos, that became part of our intervention. Next to them was placed the foyer, and all around this central core were organized all the public spaces, from the large museum to the small shops. Actually, while predominantly comprising gallery, the Art Mill includes extensive education, conference and event space, but also artists residences, locations for art foundations , and a myriad of points for local artists. The extensive outside space, adjoining and linked to MIA park, has been integrated with the design, creating a sustainable setting with panoramic views across the bay to the skyline of the financial district Particular attention was given to the study of light, which has influenced the whole architectural project since the very beginning, by creating a constant interaction, in order to obtain comfort for the users and the highest levels of art works conservation. The detailed study on the precast concrete structure allowed to meet the spatial requirements of expositive functions; moreover, the structure comply with the architectural choices about materials and colors. Because museums are high energy consumption buildings, and considered the “extreme” climate conditions of Art Mill’s site, we believed fundamental to perform an accurate energetic analysis, thanks to which has been conceived an efficient external envelope and has been designed the optimal internal configuration. Briefly, the Art Mill has been designed to be dynamic, sustainable, contemporary, in order to become a new benchmark in the urban panorama of Doha, located at the entry of the Bay, but already at the heart of the city.

Art Mill è un nuovo Museo a Doha, Qatar. Il primo scopo progettuale è stata l’integrazione con gli altri musei e con la città in generale, sfruttando lo spettacolare sito dedicato al progetto, con tre lati su quattro prospicienti la Baia di Doha. Quindi abbiamo esaminato l’affascinante retaggio lasciato dall’industria del grano presente nell’area di progetto, soffermandoci in particolare sugli spazi ritmici e ampi dei Silos, che sono diventati parte del nostro intervento. Di fianco ad essi è stato collocato il foyer, ed attorno a questo insieme centrale sono stati disposti tutti gli spazi pubblici, dal grande museo alle botteghe più piccole. Infatti, anche se è costituito in modo predominante da gallerie, l’Art Mill include importanti spazi per l’educazione, le conferenze, e gli eventi, ma anche residenze per artisti, luoghi dedicati alle fondazioni d’arte, e una moltitudine di punti per gli artisti locali. Il grande spazio esterno, adiacente e connesso al MIA park, è stato integrato con il progetto, creando un’ ambientazione sostenibile con vedute panoramiche verso la baia fino allo skyline del quartiere finanziario. Lo studio della luce ha influenzato il progetto architettonico fin dalle prime fasi, creando un costante rapporto di interazione, in modo da raggiungere il massimo comfort per i visitatori e i più alti standard per la conservazione delle opere. L’approfondimento sulle opere strutturali in calcestruzzo prefabbricato ha permesso di soddisfare le richieste spaziali delle funzioni espositive; la struttura ha anche risposto alle scelte architettoniche riguardanti i materiali ed i colori. Infine, dato che i musei sono edifici energivori, e considerato il clima “estremo” del sito dell’’Art Mill, si è ritenuto fondamentale eseguire un’ analisi energetica attenta, grazie alla quale si è concepito un involucro esterno efficiente e si è individuata la configurazione interna migliore. In sintesi, l’Art Mill è stato progettato per essere dinamico, sostenibile, contemporaneo, per rappresentare un nuovo punto di riferimento nel panorama urbano di Doha, posto all’ingresso della baia, ma già nel cuore della città.
