Through aesthetic practices, generated by the synergy between architecture and other arts or disciplines, it is possible to implement a conversion of problems into alternative possibilities: experimenting «alter» modes of redesigning the world, starting processes of collective re-signifying, translating everything into processes of collaborative actions and making them real thanks to operations of spatial and identity re-claiming. The research moves from the observation of design practices and processes of architectural reuse, led by multidisciplinary collectives. After analysing the progressive expansion of contemporary art into the fields of architecture – its opening towards the site specific, social, relational, participative and political domains – to discover motives and potentials of the art that incorporates an architectural attitude in order to design and transform the present, the study focuses on independent art spaces, mapping their diffusion on a global scale, recovering their genealogy (starting with New York and its spaces, the first to be recognised and institutionalized) and defining their characters and developments to highlight design principles of universal value as well as identifying architectural tactics and strategies for an artistic re-activation of abandoned spaces (not only buildings, but also open spaces, neighbourhoods or entire towns) through art practices. The potential of these models (alter-native to the coded ones, as they have been born outside the art «system») does not lie in formal-stylistic solutions, but in their practices, their design principles but, most of all, in the processes that have been started and in the scenarios that they open up. The trans-disciplinary approach becomes fundamental as much as it allows to face the phenomenon of alternative spaces by observing, analysing and evaluating it from different points of view (anthropologic, artistic, architectonic …) and returning, then, its articulate and rich complexity.
Attraverso pratiche estetiche, generate dalla sinergia tra l’architettura e altre arti e discipline, è possibile attuare una conversione dei problemi in possibilità alternative: sperimentare modalità “altre” di riprogettare il mondo, avviare processi di ri-significazione collettiva dell’esistente, tradurli in progetti di azioni collaborative e concretizzarli in operazioni di riappropriazione spaziale e identitaria. La ricerca prende le mosse dall’osservazione di pratiche e processi progettuali informali di riuso architettonico, condotti da collettivi artistici pluridisciplinari. Dopo aver analizzato la progressiva espansione dell’arte contemporanea nei domini dell’architettura – l’apertura alle dimensioni contestuale (site specific), sociale, relazionale, partecipativa e politica – per cogliere moventi e potenzialità di quell’arte che assume un’attitudine architettonica per progettare e trasformare il presente, lo studio si concentra sugli spazi artistici indipendenti, ne mappa la diffusione su scala globale, ne ricostruisce la genealogia (a partire dagli spazi newyorkesi, i primi a essere riconosciuti e istituzionalizzati) e ne approfondisce caratteristiche e sviluppi per giungere a trarre, dai molti casi studio “particolari”, principi progettuali di valenza universale e individuare tattiche e strategie architettoniche di riattivazione artistica di spazi abbandonati (non solo edifici, anche luoghi aperti, quartieri o interi paesi) per mezzo di pratiche artistiche. Le potenzialità di questi modelli (alter-nativi a quelli codificati, in quanto nati al di fuori del “sistema” dell’arte) non consistono nelle soluzioni stilistico-formali, ma nelle modalità e nei principi progettuali e soprattutto nei processi innescati e negli scenari a cui aprono. L’approccio trans-disciplinare diviene fondamentale nella misura in cui permette di affrontare il fenomeno degli alternative spaces osservandolo, analizzandolo e valutandolo da differenti punti di vista (antropologico, artistico, architettonico …) e di restituirne, quindi, l’articolata e ricca complessità.
