The subject of this thesis is to propose a new project for the Traverse chemical injection factory to revitalize it, respecting its heritage. Functioning until 2001, the Traverse chemical injection factory in Derince district of Kocaeli Province in Turkey; was the first of its kind, constructed in 1930s by the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). The factory was used to inject wood with creosote chemical under pressure to create railways tracks. It is now stands as a vestige of the industrial heritage of Turkey. The urban configuration in the area will be comprehended with mapping analyses, and the socio economic, historical and architectural characteristics of the study area will be used as a guide to help suggest the new use. The existing conditions of the structure are then analyzed to understand the extent of the damage caused due to various environmental conditions, lack of maintenance and also due to natural disasters such as the earthquake in Kocaeli in 1999. The new project proposal is thus equipped with interventions to stabilize the existing building and protect it from the consequences of future events as well. This will be depicted in the structural and seismic analysis presented where the model of the existing structure will be compared to the model of the same with interventions to understand the extent of improvement.
Questa tesi ha come obiettivo la proposta di riqualificazione dell’industria chimica Traverse. Funzionante fino al 2001, la fabbrica chimica Traverse è localizzata nel distretto di Derince della provincia di Kocaeli in Turchia. È’ stata costruita negli anni ’30 dalle Ferrovie dello Stato turche (TCDD). Nella fabbrica avvenivano lavorazioni di iniezione nel legno di creosoto chimico sotto pressione per creare i binari ferroviari. Oggi rappresenta un residuo del patrimonio industriale turco. La configurazione urbana dell’area verrà studiata attraverso l’analisi di mappe esistenti e insieme alle caratteristiche economiche, storiche e architettoniche dell’area di studio verrà usata come guida per individuare la nuova possibile destinazione d’uso. Vengono quindi analizzate le condizioni esistenti della struttura per capire l’estensione dei danni causati dai fattori ambientali, dalla mancanza di manutenzione, oltre che i disastri ambientali come il terremoto avvenuto a Kocaeli nel 1999. Pertanto, la proposta progettuale consiste in primo luogo in interventi per stabilizzare l’edificio e proteggerlo dalle conseguenze di eventuali eventi futuri. Questo verrà presentato attraverso un’analisi strutturale e sismica dove il modello della struttura esistente viene confrontato con quello della struttura dopo gli interventi previsti, in modo tale da poter valutare l’efficacia dei miglioramenti apportati.
