Environmental performances and social inclusion. A project for the Rocinha's favela

The specific characteristics and unique constraints of the Brazilian Favelas represent a good example of the challenges that the planet will face in the first half of the current century. The world population is moving towards cities increasing the average poverty, indeed according to ONU between 45 and 50% of urban inhabitants of the world will be in poverty conditions by 2020. The demand of housing is dramatically increasing, making more and more difficult for the governments to respond to population’s needs, basic services are not enough anymore and outsourcing becomes the most practiced but unsustainable trend; in such environments all this lead to difficulties in providing even the most basic sanitation facilities either due to the very high building density, overbuilding and due to uncontrolled informal actions. ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCES AND SOCIAL INCLUSION A project for the Rocinha favela The project is a result of a joint venture between academics, ONGs, engineers, architects, urban planners and geographers trying to put knowhow and practice at the service of favela residents, for a brighter future, a “sorte verde” (green destiny).

Le caratteristiche specifiche e i vincoli unici delle favelas brasiliane rappresentano un buon esempio delle sfide che il pianeta dovrà affrontare nella prima metà di questo secolo. La popolazione mondiale si sta spostando verso le città, aumentando la povertà media; anzi secondo l’ONU tra il 45 e il 50% degli abitanti delle città del mondo sarà in condizioni di povertà entro il 2020. La domanda di abitazioni è drammaticamente in aumento, rendendo sempre più difficile per i governi rispondere alle esigenze della popolazione, i servizi di base non sono più sufficienti e l’outsourcing diventa la tendenza più praticata, ma insostenibile; in tali ambienti tutto questo ha portato alla difficoltà nel fornire anche i servizi igienico-sanitari di base, sia a causa della elevata densità edilizia, cementificazione ed a causa fenomeni di urbanizzazione informali incontrollati. LE PERFORMANCE AMBIENTALI E L’INCLUSIONE SOCIALE Un progetto per la favela Rocinha: Il progetto è il risultato di una joint venture tra accademici, ONG, ingegneri, architetti, urbanisti e geografi, che tentano di mettere know-how e pratica al servizio dei residenti favela, per un futuro più luminoso, una “sorte verde” (il destino verde).
