Re.Mark. Reuse as market

Re.Mark represents the turning of a long professional and personal history which sees us for two years protagonists of this project experience. In this thesis, in particular, they are made to convey two different main instances, from one side the reuse of the Islands, Sea and Food Cluster structures, from the other side the will to maintain alive the main theme of Milan universal exhibition, imprinted on food and nutrition: “Feed the World, Energy for Life”. So the choice to design a new covered market derives from the convergence of these two needs. The best place to receive this new commercial building was identified in the south portion of Piazza Santa Maria del Suffragio, located in the zone 4 of Milan: a small urban piece already characterised by the presence of a little covered market abandoned from years, but that was protagonist in the last period of a bigger refurbishment and reuse project that the Municipality of Milan was carryng out for the covered markets. The project is characterised not only by the will of reuse the wooden Expo structures, but also by will of revitalise a zone of Milan, that in the last years was particularly neglected, introducing a new architectural element, alive, vital, a market with european characters, capable to impose itself as a new urban landmark with a strong appeal towards the inhabitants of quarter 4 and not only them. The symbol of the designed building is the facade, a highly distinctive element, designed and developed to answer in the best way to two different needs, primarily to highlight with its colours the presence of something different from the rest of the urban context and secondly to filter the light so there can be a more comfortable environment inside the market. The result of planning efforts is an intervention that presents facets in more area of interest, by the theme of recovery and reuse to the innovation urban looking up to the structural detail and energy.

Re.Mark rappresenta la svolta di un lungo percorso professionale e personale che da due anni ci vede protagonisti di questa esperienza progettuale. Nel presente lavoro di tesi, in particolare, si sono fatte convogliare due differenti istanze principali, da un lato il riutilizzo delle strutture portanti del Cluster Isole,Mare e Cibo, dall’altro la volontà di mantenere vivo il tema dell’esposizione universale della città meneghina, improntato sul cibo e sulla nutrizione: “Nutrire il Pianeta, Energia per la Vita”. La decisione quindi di progettare un mercato coperto deriva proprio dalla convergenza di queste due scelte. Il luogo migliore ad accogliere questa nuova struttura commerciale è stato identificato nella porzione meridionale di Piazza Santa Maria del Suffragio, situata nella zona 4 di Milano: un piccolo frammento urbano già caratterizzato dalla presenza di un minuto mercato coperto dismesso da anni, ma che è stato protagonista nell’ultimo periodo di un più ampio progetto di riqualificazione e riuso che il Comune di Milano sta portando avanti per i mercati coperti. Il progetto è caratterizzato non solo dalla volontà di riutilizzo delle strutture lignee di Expo, ma anche da quella di rivitalizzare una zona di Milano che negli ultimi decenni è stata parecchio trascurata introducendo un elemento architettonico nuovo, vivo, vitale, un mercato dai caratteri europei capace di imporsi come un nuovo landmark urbano dal forte richiamo nei confronti degli abitanti del quartiere 4 e non solo. Emblema dell’edificio progettato è la facciata, un elemento fortemente caratterizzante, pensata e sviluppata per rispondere in modo ottimale a diverse esigenze, in primis evidenziare con i suoi colori la presenza di un qualcosa di diverso dal resto dell’abitato urbano e in secondo luogo quella di filtrare la luce in modo da ottenere un maggior comfort ambientale all’interno del mercato. Il risultato degli sforzi progettuali è un intervento che presenta sfaccettature in più ambiti di interesse, dal tema del recupero e riuso a quello dell’innovazione, dall’aspetto urbanistico fino al dettaglio strutturale ed energetico.
