“Ephemeral Data – An Exploration of Contemporary Visual Culture” is the title for my final MSc dissertation. It is a project and a manual aimed at the study of ephemeral web content, a type of media text who is typically produced on Instagram and Snapchat. The inspiration for the research was born from the need to study this new kind of content, who is rapidly emerging in new media and that is changing their very essence. The idea also originated from the will of examine as a Communication Designer the great quantity of visual content produced on these media, and from the interest created in me by the sight of the high grade of innovation and success reached by various brands on a communication and marketing level, especially focusing on the fashion industry. My dissertation is composed of four parts. The first is a historical overview of the phenomenon, who I made to better frame my study, in personal, academic and scientific terms. The second part is composed by an exercise surveying the state of the art for the research techniques for digital content, who was inspired by the Digital Methods and Cultural Analytics styles, and applies such methods to the Instagram platform. In this part I analyze relevant case studies, and I try extending the Digital Methods principles in new studies conducted by me in the fashion industry communication – my main area of interest. The third part shows how ephemeral content invalidates some principles and techniques so far used to study digital content. I thus explore some known possibilities in media sociology, and I integrate those to Digital Methods and data visualization, proposing new guidelines for the study of the new topics I choose. I did develop a tool (engineered on HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JQuery) called the Stories Explorer, who puts to practice the theory I propose, and I use it to make visualizations. The fourth and last part is composed by interviews I made to professionals in the social media and online world. Those are meant to better understand the more practical and professional side to the topics I touch, and help to point out how a Communication Designer can work upon such new media. My thesis is written in English language.
