Il Regno Unito al lavoro. Un atlante di luoghi e professioni attraverso undici secoli di storia

Digital humanities investigates how digital formats and tools are changing the way we share knowledge in the humanities. These activities are thus found at the intersection of digital technology and humanities disciplines. The field of digital humanities is growing rapidly. Many new platforms and tools are under development at any time that are relevant to work in digital humanities. Timelines and mapping, visualization and rendering, new ways of doing data mining and image processing... The main goal of this project is to map the relations that exist between places and people’s professions in order to develop a tool that enables to identify those cultural patterns and trends which characterized a specific historical moment. The aim of this thesis is thus to explore this field through some specific research questions that define the dataset, namely the biographies of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, by means of digital, statistical and representative methods. The study has been carried out following four main research courses: the first three questions Who?, What? e Where? are necessary to define the field of work, “who” are we talking about (a quantitative analysis of the biographies), “what” they do (thei professions) and “where” they do it (the venues cited in the biographies). The fourth research environment is the one concerning the relations between the main elements previousy identified, namely professions and places: What, where & when? Which profession took place in a specific venue? The entire project has been supported by a brief historical research that helps to pinpoint the motivation for a given peculiarity: why is it possible to find so many people practicing the same profession in a definite place? Which event caused a decrease in number in a specific period of time? The research include a timespan of about a thousand years, from XI to XXI century, painting a realistic picture of those historical and cultural patterns that had been identified. The attempt of this thesis is therefore to provide a useful tool to the exploration of this field both to those that approach the subject for the first time, by giving accessible and easy to consult information, and to who is more experienced in the Digital Humanities, thus able to give a more in-depth interpretation of this area of interest by giving new contributions to the research.

L’Umanistica Digitale o Digital Humanites si occupa di analizzare come gli strumenti e i format digitali stiano cambiando il modo di condividere la conoscenza umanistica. Queste pratiche si trovano quindi all’intersezione tra la tecnologia digitale e le discipline umanistiche. Il campo delle Digital Humanities è in continua crescita. Molte nuove piattaforme e strumenti sono in fase di sviluppo in ogni momento rilevante per questo sutdio. Timeline e mapping, visualizzazioni e rendering, nuovi metodi per il data mining e image processing… L’obiettivo centrale di questo progetto è quello di mappare le relazioni che intercorrono tra i luoghi e le professioni delle persone in modo da elaborare uno strumento che permetta di identificare quei pattern e quelle tendenze culturali che caratterizzarono un determinato momento storico. Questa tesi vuole quindi esplorare questo ambito attraverso alcune specifiche domande di ricerca atte a definire il dataset in esame, ovvero le biografie presenti nell’Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, tramite l’uso di strumenti digitali, statistici e rappresentativi. Lo studio è stato svolto seguendo quattro percorsi di ricerca: le prime tre domande Who?, What? e Where? servono a definire il campo di studio, ovvero di “chi” stiamo parlando (analisi quantitativa delle biografie del dataset), “che cosa” fanno (le loro professioni) e “dove” svolgono le loro attività (i luoghi citati). Il quarto ambiente di ricerca è quello relativo alle relazioni tra gli elementi salienti identificati precedentemente, ovvero tra luogo e professione: What, where & when? Quale professione viene praticata in un determinato luogo? L’intero studio è stato affiancato da una breve ricerca storica che aiuti ad identificare le motivazioni di determinate scoperte: come mai in un determinato luogo è possibile ritrovare un elevato numero di persone che praticano una specifica professione? Quale evento ha scatenato un calo in un determinato periodo? La ricerca spazia lungo un arco temporale di circa mille anni, dal XI al XXI secolo, dipingendo quindi un quadro realistico dei pattern culturali e storici che si vanno ad identificare. Il tentativo di questa tesi è quindi quello di fornire uno strumento utile per l’esplorazione di questo campo sia a chi si avvicina a questi ambienti per la prima volta, facendo sì che le informazioni siano accessibili e di facile consultazione, sia a chi è più navigato nell’ambito delle discipline umanistiche e delle Digital Humanities e che quindi può fornire un’interpretazione più approfondita di questa realtà apportando nuovi contenuti alla ricerca.
