To reduce energy consumption in buildings, researchers have in the recent decade explored the potential of changing occupants’ energy consumption behaviors using eco-feedback systems. Prior research have studied various factors impacting the effectiveness of eco-feedback system, including exteral factors and inherent factors. Inherent factors include the characteristics and settins of eco-feedback system, and external factors means the impact factors excluding inherent factors, such as the characteristics of occupants. Prior research has studied some impact factors. However, two potentially important factors, external factor culture and inherent factor delivery mothed, have not yet been examined. Besides, long-term effects of eco-feedback system still need further explore. Thus, this thesis developed an eco-feedback system based on two different delivery methods, website and smartphone application, and conducted a long-term experiment to address this gap. Firstly, this thesis examined the impact of delivery method on the effectiveness of eco-feedback systems in building energy conservation by conducting a long-term experiment based on web-based and app-based eco-feedback system developed in this study. Results indicated that mobile app could achieve more effective and durable behavioral change and energy conservation than website. With time went by and removal of part or entire of eco-feedback system, occupants responded to app-based eco-feedback weaker and rebounded. The benefits of web-based eco-feedback system didn’t change whether email reminder was provided or not. However, removal of whole web-based eco-feedback system caused rebound effect on behavioral change and energy conservation, which eventually lead to increased energy consumption. Besides, the experimental results gave evidence in durability of the effectiveness of eco-feedback systems. Secondly, this thesis aims to examine the impact of cultural differences on the effectiveness of eco-feedback systems in reshaping building occupants’ energy consumption behaviors by conducting an experiment based on web-based eco-feedback system developed in this study. Subsequent changes in energy consumption behaviors were analyzed, and correlated with their cultural background, which was assessed using VSM 2013 designed based on Hofstede's dimensions of culture. Results proved that cultural background assessed in certain dimensions were significantly correlated with the effectiveness of eco-feedback technologies. Additionally, the mechinism how culture impacts the effectiveness of eco-feedback was analyzed. This thesis, for the first time, analyzed the impact of culture and delivery method on the effectiveness of eco-feedback systems in the long term. The results suggested that eco-feedback systems should be tailored to specific cultural context and combined with suitable delivery method to maximize their effectiveness in building energy conservation and make the conservation effect durable.
Per ridurre il consumo energetico negli edifici, i ricercatori nell'ultimo decennio ha esplorato il potenziale di cambiamento degli occupanti il consumo energetico comportamenti usando eco - sistemi di feedback. Prima ricerca hanno studiato vari fattori che incidono sull 'efficacia del sistema di eco - feedback.tuttavia, due potenzialmente importanti fattori, fattore esterno della cultura e consegna mothed fattore intrinseco, non sono ancora state esaminate.inoltre, gli effetti a lungo termine del sistema eco feedback ancora bisogno di esplorare ulteriormente.
