A side effect of industrial revolution was a significant deterioration of the environment and human life. The result of total subordination for the industry led to the emergence of people's health problem, weaken social ties, loss of aesthetic beauty and lack of nature in the city. Additionally, the uncontrolled expansion of cities caused increased level of pollution, loss of biodiversity and environmental resources. In response to all these concerning issues, green areas, known by their social and environmental benefits, became the focus of planners, architects, landscape architects and many other scientists from different fields. This thesis focused on major urban planning and design theories, movements and science fields with a greenery approach, which made use of green as a fundamental feature for their designs and principles. At the first step, the information of all selected concepts were compiled. Based on collected information, the timeline has been shaped, in order to enable better understanding of the development process of each theory and its relation as well as the evolution of urban planning and design theories with greenery approach in general, in short to provide a comprehensive picture. Following, a number of human and environmental values of urban green areas were presented which later used as lenses to interpret selected disciplines and movements. After a detailed examination an answer to the following question was found: What is the paradigm shift that justifies a new theory? What is the real change from one theory to another? The obtained result was, the evolution of societal and environmental challenges cause a change in values which in consequence lead to the emergence of a new theories. The next step, in order to find a translation of greenery approach in practice, several contemporary city visions and plans were presented and compared among themselves. This, later enabled to describe where theories are located in recent city plans and visions as well as their influence on contemporary and future cities. Finally, a brief vision of future trends, the possible role of urban green areas and the city as well as their relation, has been drawn.
Inizialmente è stata curata l'informazione riguardo a tutti i suddetti concetti.
