The thesis started from the interest about that part of the city that is traditionally called periphery but which today, more than others, it defies categorization and contributes to the definition, with its problems and its potential, the city's identity. We therefore wondered what does it mean nowadays taking action on this type of place in a city like Milan. Taking as a starting point the new masterplan of the municipality for the Lorenteggio district in the Giambellino zone and the project for the linear park that will link the station of San Cristoforo to Porta Genova, we sensed the possibility of proposing an attempted interpretive synthesis of the problems and potential of these spaces. The presence of a large empty space, readable in as a unit, that divides the railway and the new park from the residential area, becomes the ability to trigger a new dialogue between these two parts of the city through the interpretation of terrain vagues, which today presents themselves as a huge urban rear accentuating the barrier role of the infrastructure. When we saw some open space bands crossing the railway, daughters of the formal design of the early '900 city, we asked ourselves how they could create an urban scale reconnection system while maintaining their characteristic of voids and merge them into a unified system with the terrain vague. The vague memory of a plan may again become an opportunity to create space for the city? Acknowledging the need to redefine priorities as a "public space" area, the strategic instrument was used as a hypothesis for the redefinition of space, growing through infrastructural items of empty spaces and specific points that might act as activators. We therefore reasoned with overlapped elements and layers that could come into contact in a manner different from time to time depending on the response that sought to give the specific context in which they were part. The public space, where there is the density of the historic fabric, often only provides generic outdoor areas, but it could bear a stronger functionalization that could create places for all of those social sharing practices present in the Giambellino district. The different definition of the uses for each cross band perpendicular to the railroad tries to compensate in this way the lack of identity of these common areas, speaking with varying degrees of specificity depending on the more or less strong presence of an urban and social context that can support different ways of use for the spaces. These bands become formal occasions for the creation of new landscapes composed by the sequence or the clash of different urban materials and used with different density, zero-volume containers of city life. In the crossing points of the bands with the terrain vague along the railroad tracks, some nodes have been defined allowing the view to the park, while secondary connections - vehicular and pedestrian - become functional occasions to restore accessibility to this space through the form of a large Woonerf in which we have put some small features - nodes - that can ensure the activation of the system. The spaces between one axis and the other along the railway were thought to be densified during the time, according to a logic not completely included in the project, but that will be affected by the accessibility and public space that become the starting point to rebuild the front on the railroad and the park.

Abstract
