Sulle tracce di Bangkok. Nuovi spazi pubblici per gli studenti della Chulalongkorn University (il codice Bangkok)

This thesis project comes from a curiosity about a very complex theme: the City. Bangkok, multicultural and chaotic metropolis, has many contradictions that overlap internally as 'layers', and that characterize the charm of this city. The immense infrastructure, the enormous crossing spaces, make this city full of dynamism. The trip to Bangkok made it clear to my eyes how is real a loss of the past tracks, as if the life of the inhabitants should fall through the streets of this huge metropolis, as in fact, in the contemporary city have been lost those common certainties, meeting, sharing. Through a very nice experience partitioned with students from the Faculty of Architecture in Bangkok at Chulalongkorn University, during an international workshop held in the past May, it soon became apparently clear how these large spaces, are not designed based on a human scale, how are dispersive. The first part of the thesis describes how it is carried out this activity, the purpose of the workshop, which included the upgrading of the waterfront of one of the neighborhoods that are on the river, the Chao Phraya. For some groups, this work has been the possibility of including the social theme, infact this neighborhood has a religious melting pot, and we thought back to the idea of ​​public space that could accommodate and are supposed to be experiences places to the children of the district. The second part presents the theme of the actual thesis, then the need for young people to have a meeting place, away from urban turmoil. The project, starting from a more general study on the meaning of public space, offers a range of sharing places reserved for young people of this city, especially to the students of Chulalongkorn, which owns the area chosen for the thesis project. These spaces are deep to be an incitement to meetings, exchanges and the ability to react to situations of social marginality.

Questo progetto di tesi nasce dalla curiosità rispetto ad un tema molto complesso: la Città. Bangkok, metropoli multiculturale e caotica, presenta molteplici contraddizioni che si sovrappongono al proprio interno come ‘layers’, e che ne caratterizzano il fascino. Le immense infrastrutture, gli enormi spazi da attraversare, la rendono una città carica di dinamismo. Il viaggio a Bangkok ha reso evidente ai miei occhi come si siano quasi perse le tracce di un passato, come se la vita quotidiana degli abitanti scivolasse via tra le strade di questa immensa metropoli, come di fatto, nella città contemporanea si siano persi di vista quelle certezze comuni, l’incontro, la condivisione. Attraverso un esperienza molto bella spartita con gli studenti della facoltà di architettura della Chulalongkorn University di Bangkok, durante un workshop internazionale tenutosi nel Maggio passato, è subito apparso evidente quanto questi ampi spazi ,evidentemente non pensati sulla base di una misura umana, siano dispersivi. La prima parte della tesi racconta come si sia svolta questa attività, i propositi del workshop, che prevedeva la riqualifica del waterfront di uno dei quartieri che si faccia sul fiume di Bangkok, il Chao Phraya. Per alcuni gruppi questo lavoro ha rappresentato la possibilità di inserire il tema sociale, essendo che questo quartiere possiede un melting pot religioso, abbiamo ripensato ad un’idea di spazio pubblico che potesse accogliere e far condividere esperienze ai bambini del distretto. La seconda parte invece presenta il tema della tesi vero e proprio, ovvero l’esigenza per i giovani di un luogo di incontro e di ritrovo, lontano dallo scompiglio cittadino. Il progetto, partendo da uno studio più generale sul significato di spazio pubblico, propone una serie di luoghi di condivisione riservato ai giovani di questa città, in particolare agli studenti stessi della Chulalongkorn, che è proprietaria dell’area scelta per il progetto di tesi. Tali spazi si profondo di essere un incitamento all’incontro, allo scambio e alla possibilità di reagire a situazioni di marginalità sociale.
