La Seine reinventee. Re-programming the banks of the river

The “Reinventer la Seine” is an international architectural competition that aims to propose new ways of living and feeling the space of the cities along the Seine River and to invent the new city of the 21st century. The rivers have always had a nodal role in the civilization and the urbanization of villages and cities, not only produced varied natural landscapes of high biodiversity quality, but also worked as links between different places, allowing the transport of people and permitting economic and commercial exchanges. Today the Seine river represents a link between Paris and the ocean and it is a strategical and potential element for future developments because of its marine and river ports, the quality of its natural landscapes, the variety of industrial activities and the richness of the cultural heritage sites that develop all along its 776 Km. The competition suggests 41 relevant sites, for which innovative solutions of a new possible relationship between the river and the cities should be proposed and whose main objective is to enhance the central role of the Seine river as a lively node of the economy, the production, the culture and the tourism. The idea of this thesis is to propose a dynamic large-scale approach suggesting a possible solution of the renovation of the Seine River based on the idea that a stable project may not be the right answer to this task. The dynamical and mutable approach originates from the will of giving a new meaning and higher values to the existing and consolidated realities through a modifiable and complex system that can guarantee the continuous variation of the results. The nodal suggestion of the thesis is to take advantage from the movement of the river to re-create a strong network of programs, exchanges, and unexpected events by exploiting all the potential values of the Seine Valley that today are not well related to each other. The project has been developed through the design of some movable programs and fixed nodes that take advantage of the Seine as an element of connection and of the existing elements along the river to create an always changing system of fluxes producing holistic events that are richer than the sum of the single parts.

“Reinventer la Seine” è un concorso internazionale di architettura che si pone l’obiettivo di proporre nuovi modi di vivere e percepire lo spazio delle città lungo la Senna e di inventare la nuova città del XXI secolo. I fiumi hanno sempre avuto un ruolo nodale sia nello sviluppo delle civiltà che nell’urbanizzazione di villaggi e città, non solamente garantendo paesaggi naturali di elevata biodiversità, ma anche connessione tra vari luoghi consentendo il trasporto di persone e favorendo scambi economici e commerciali. Oggi la Senna rappresenta la connessione fisica tra Parigi e l’oceano ed è un elemento strategico e potenziale per lo sviluppo futuro grazie ai suoi porti marittimi e fluviali, la qualità dei suoi paesaggi naturali, la varietà industriale e anche grazie alla ricchezza dei siti culturali presenti che si sviluppano lungo i 776 Km della sua lunghezza. La competizione suggerisce 41 siti rilevanti come spunto di soluzioni innovative per una nuova relazione tra il fiume e le città limitrofe e si pone come obiettivo l’accrescimento del ruolo nodale della Senna come fulcro vitale economico, produttivo, culturale e turistico. Questa tesi propone un approccio dinamico ad ampia scala, suggerendo una possibile rinnovazione della Senna basata sull’idea che progetti invariabili e stabili potrebbero non essere una soluzione esaustiva. L’approccio dinamico e mutevole è scaturito dal desiderio di dare un nuovo significato e maggior valore alle esistenti e già consolidate realtà lungo la Senna tramite un modificabile e complesso sistema che può garantire la continua variazione dei suoi risultati. La suggestione centrale di questa tesi prende spunto dal movimento del fiume per ricreare un forte network di programmi, scambi ed eventi inaspettati, sfruttando le potenziali ricchezze della Valle della Senna che oggi non sono ben relazionate tra loro. Il progetto è stato sviluppato tramite l’ideazione di programmi mobili e nodi fissi che possono trarre benefici dalla Senna quale elemento di connessione e dagli elementi esistenti lungo il fiume per creare un sempre nuovo sistema di flussi che possano produrre eventi olistici che sono più ricchi della somma delle singole parti.
