Since the old days, the great forces of Nature have been the only processes able to create and modify the shape of Earth. Nowadays something has changed. Mankind’s activities have turned gradually into new forces able to create irreversible effects on the planet. The manufacturing sector, while trying to dull the current need of materials, is constantly reshaping it. As a new morphological force that creates new striking landscapes which require to be evolved and recognized into a different identity: the Manufactured Landscape. In Italy, the Carrara marble quarries are the most representative examples. They are located within the Apuan Alps, mountains well known to be depicted as the place of the innate excess, due to the sublime relationships within the old nature and the younger signs of human activities, and surrounded by the unique environment of the Tuscan seaside on west, and the Garfagnana Valley with the Northern Apennines on east. They have seen their birth during the Romans, they have gained global fame during the Renaissance, Neoclassicism and Modernism, and the contemporary sculptures and architectures still give to this cubist nature inestimable value. Besides the Arts, there is also the historical cultural value linked to the quarry cultivation, closely related to the excavation technologies’ evolutions. However, the Carrara marble quarries have not been recognized yet as any landscape’s form, but only as a criticality which burdens on the pristine nature. But are they just that? Thanks to extended context researches, analysis and local visits, the thesis’ project arise with the purpose to suggest an alternative solution, giving importance to the irreversible quarry morphology. To make it possible, the project aims to make more accessible one of the marble mining district by the visitors, in order to evolve its identity into Manufactured Landscape. Hence, the project is composed by a route and four areas which will give to the visitors the opportunity to get in a close contact with all the different quarries’ typologies, to look to the striking ongoing process of their cultivation and to be free to move in a suggestive inactive quarry.
Fin dai tempi antichi le grandi forze della Natura sono state gli unici processi in grado di modificare la forma della Terra. Oggigiorno qualcosa sta cambiando. Le attività umane si stanno trasformando in nuove forze capaci di imprimere segni irreversibili sul nostro pianeta. Il settore manifatturiero, nel tentativo di soddisfare l’attuale richiesta di materia, lo sta ridisegnando. Come una nuova forza morfologica che da origine a nuovi paesaggi, che necessitano di essere evoluti in una nuova identità: quella del Paesaggio Fabbricato. In Italia, le cave del marmo di Carrara ne sono l’esempio più rappresentativo. Sono situate nelle Alpi Apuane, montagne ben note per essere state descritte come il luogo dell’innato eccesso, per via della sublime relazione che insiste tra la natura ed i segni delle attività antropiche, e sono circondate da un ambiente unico, delimitato ad ovest dalla costa toscana e ad est dalla Garfagnana e dagli Appennini Settentrionali. Esse hanno visto la loro nascita durante l’impero romano, hanno ottenuto fama mondiale durante il Rinascimento, il Neoclassicismo ed il Modernismo, e le architetture e sculture contemporanee continuano ad attribuire a questa natura cubista un valore inestimabile. Inoltre, esiste un valore culturale storico inerente alla coltivazione della cava, legato agli sviluppi delle tecnologie. Le cave del marmo di Carrara, tuttavia, non sono state ancora riconosciute come nessuna forma di paesaggio, ma soltanto come una sua criticità. Ma sono realmente solo questo? In seguito ad attente ricerche, analisi del contesto e visite in loco, il progetto di tesi sorge con l’intento di proporre una soluzione alternativa che miri a dare importanza all’irreversibile morfologia di cava. Affinché questo diventi possibile, il progetto ha lo scopo di rendere più accessibile ai visitatori uno dei bacini marmiferi, al fine di far evolvere la sua identità in Paesaggio Fabbricato. Il progetto è così composto da un percorso e quattro aree che offriranno al visitatore la possibilità di immergersi nel contesto delle diverse tipologie di cave, di osservare dal vivo le loro tecniche di coltivazione, e di muoversi liberamente tra i gradoni di una spettacolare cava inattiva.
