The goal of this thesis is to present a suggestion of seismic vulnerability evaluation form for churches characterized by axially symmetric plan. The 28-collapse mechanisms identified in the existing evaluation forms have proven inadequate to accurately describe the collapse mechanisms of central plan churches. Consequently, the investigation phase after a seismic event cannot be conducted sufficiently. From this perspective, the thesis aims is the assessment of such measures by the investigation of common elements of central plan churches decayed by time or damaged by recent earthquakes. The investigation phase was initially performed by visual inspection on numerous churches. Subsequently finite element models for three typical churches and a rounded façade were developed. The dynamic analysis provided the identification of the critical modal shapes for all four cases, as well as the subsequent nonlinear analysis provided the establishment of crack patterns in the macro-elements. By comparing the results of visual inspection and dynamic analysis, five new collapse mechanisms were identified, that could be possibly included in the seismic vulnerability and damage evaluation form for axially symmetric churches providing a more precise tool for recording earthquake aftermaths.

Abstract
By comparing the results of visual inspection and dynamic analysis, five new collapse mechanisms were identified, that could be possibly included in the seismic vulnerability and damage evaluation form for axially symmetric churches providing a more precise tool for recording earthquake aftermaths.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
