This project is about the urban renewal and refurbishment of the railway yard of San Cristoforo in Milan. It aims to the regeneration of the yard plot of land, which is nowadays separated from the urban fabric by the railway and the Naviglio Grande and localized in a difficult socio-cultural context. The area is a strategic point of the city renovation and part of a larger project called Scali Milano about the requalification of abandoned rail yards. The project operates on both landscape and artefact. On the re-landscaping side, a linear park will give back to the citizens a vast green area: the park will act as an ecological lab for visitors, with a wood, urban gardens and a plant-based sewage treatment system of the Olona river, which goes through the project plot; these functions will be completed by playgrounds, relax and fitness areas throughout the park for all the neighborhoods. The station for car transportation on trains was projected by the famous architect Aldo Rossi at the end of the Eighties and fallen into disuse before completion. Today remains only the concrete structure, which is reinforced and re-used by this project for social integration and gathering purposes as a cultural center. The library will be enhanced by spaces devoted to the cinema, the music and the arts, by laboratories and by socialization spots; it will coexist with other functions like coworking spaces, public rooftop and a covered market, which is potentially extendable to the public square in front of the building. The architectural key is the quotation of the Aldo Rossi’s original project, stamped on the external metallic frame, which recreates the volumes of the station. On the other hand, the interiors release from the strict plan by Rossi and his framework, particularly in the stairs and skylights volumes and in the cadence of the windows, which reveal themselves only in specific luminous conditions.
