OASES : from fragments to centralities. A new cultural hub for Shiraz

This project arises from the opportunity and interest in promoting the art of Shiraz from its birthplace, through the creation of an emblematic and representative spaces able to accommodate, in the heart of the city. The project, an artistic and cultural manifestation, will also be a key part of the revitalization process of the historic center of Shiraz. The location of the project is in the historic context within the city, and it is a monumental site on the left side of the Vakil bazaar; the Zandieh era complex, where it is important to emphasize and enhance the character of the site. Nevertheless, the project, though anchors to the existing city, proposes a new form for it, assigning the large open space the role of setting up new relations among the parts. The project aims to revitalize the existing void and transform it into one of the vital organs of the city; meeting place and point of intersection. As a result, the proposal on one hand wishes to maintain the open condition that the site for the future of the city possesses today, and on the other hand to extend the dense urban fabric of the historic center. For the design of the cultural complex in the old tissue of Shiraz, it should be addressed two difficult challenges: 1-To insert a significant volume of construction in an urban fabric of modest buildings from different periods of time. 2-To interpret in today’s language a program that, by its very nature and location, seems to inevitably lead towards the folkloric picturesque. The proposal for the city of Shiraz might be seen as artificial and iconographical whose spirit draws on the traditions of the Persian world and contemporary every-day life and culture. Though based upon intrinsic features of urban design - program, accessibility, representation and form the main endeavor of the composition of parts is to transcend this formal level through complementarities, affinities, and differentiations among the distinct centralities. In order to reach this aim, the recovery of certain traditions which are going to be forgotten among people seem urgent in order to provide the basis for new forms of knowledge that can be modified and used in other contexts in the future.

Questo progetto nasce dall'opportunità e dall'interesse di promuovere l'arte di Shiraz dal suo luogo natio, attraverso la creazione di uno spazio emblematico e rappresentativo, capace di essere accogliente, proprio nel cuore della città. Il progetto, una manifestazione artistica e culturale, è anche il perno per il processo di rivitalizzazione del centro storico di Shiraz. Il luogo in cui si trova il progetto è nel centro storico ed è un sito monumentale alla sinistra del bazaar Vakil; il complesso risalente all'era Zandieh, dove è importante enfatizzare il carattere del sito del progetto. Non di meno, il progetto, attraverso degli appigli alla città esistente, propone per questa una nuova forma, assegnando all'ampio spazio aperto il compito di creare nuove relazioni tra le parti esistenti. Lo scopo è quello di riqualificare il vuoto esistente e trasformarlo in un organismo vivo e pulsante della città; con luoghi che si incontrano e luoghi di intersezione interessanti. Come risultato, la proposta da una parte mira a mantenere la caratteristica di apertura che il sito possiede oggi, e dall'altra di estendere il tessuto urbano denso del centro storico. Per il design del complesso culturale nel tessuto antico di Shiraz, è necessario affrontare due sfide difficili: 1- Inserire nuovi volumi significativi in un tessuto urbano composto da edifici di modeste dimensioni risalenti a epoche diverse e sedimentati nel tempo; 2- Interpretare con un linguaggio contemporaneo un programma che, per la tua natura e posizione, sembra inevitabilmente richiamare il folklore locale. La proposta per la città di Shiraz può sembrare artificiale e iconografico, della quale lo spirito ricalca la tradizione del mondo persiano, la sua cultura e la sua quotidianità oggi. Pensato attraverso elementi di urban design – programma, accessibilità, rappresentazione e forma- la totalità della composizione delle parti trascende il livello formale attraverso elementi complementari, affinità e differenziazioni tra le distinte centralità. Al fine di raggiungere questo obiettivo, il recupero di alcune tradizioni che stanno per essere cancellate dalla memoria delle persone sembra fondamentale per creare delle basi solide per una nuova forma di conoscenza che può essere utilizzata e modificata in contesti simili in futuro.
