NSIGO. A place-based urban regeneration strategy in Kampala, Uganda, Africa

‘Nsigo’ is both a place-based urban regeneration strategy proposed for areas of informal settlements and a word in Lunganda, that means seed. Just like a pioneer spore, the proposed modular and serial design takes places in areas characterized by similar conditions, colonizing bare, but fertile, environments. The strategy works, at the same time, at different scales (regional, urban, and architectural) taking advantage of existing cultural identities, local practices and economic activities. Therefore, Nsigo is a program of urban actions more than a single architectural project, aimed at re-activating, by design, an urban margin taking advantage of existing, but hidden, local potentials. Therefore, through this strategy, a neglected infrastructure becomes an urban place, and this experience has been a testing-ground for a methodology that can be repeated and scaled, always adapting to the characteristics of the places where it is being implemented. The pioneer Nsigo has been proposed for a potential site located in Kampala, Uganda with three principal targets: i) creating a green corridor connecting the city, the informal settlements and a community centre. ii) creating a green productive belt as a source of raw materials for the community. iii) creating an infrastructured public space to support the already existing social and commercial activities of the community. In summary, this proposal aims at enhancing the pedestrian walkability, giving access to economic activities and public spaces to fit the life of the community.

“Nsigo” è sia una strategia di rigenerazione urbana place-based per aree caratterizzate da insediamenti informali, sia una parola in lingua Luganda che significa semi. Esattamente come una spora pioniera, il design modulare e seriale proposto è pensato per colonizzare ambienti spogli ma allo stesso tempo fertili. La strategia lavora simultaneamente a varie scale (regionale, urbana e architettonica), sfruttando l’identità culturale, le pratiche locali e le attività economiche già esistenti. Di conseguenza, Nsigo è un programma di azioni urbane più che un singolo progetto architettonico, che ha lo scopo di riattivare attraverso il design un margine urbano, sfruttando il potenziale locale esistente ma nascosto. Il risultato è un’infrastruttura abbandonata trasformata in uno spazio urbano. L’esperienza della tesi è stata l’occasione per testare una strategia che può essere ripetuta e scalata adattandosi alle caratteristiche dei luoghi dove viene implementata. Il progetto pilota di Nsigo è situato a Kampala (Uganda) e ha tre obiettivi principali: I) creare un corridoio verde che collega la città, gli insediamenti informali e il centro della comunità II) creare una cintura produttiva verde come fonte di materie prime per la comunità. III) creare uno spazio pubblico infrastrutturato che supporti le attività sociali e commerciali già esistenti nella comunità. In sintesi, questa proposta tende a migliorare la passeggiata pedonale, dando l’accesso alle attività economiche e agli spazi pubblici per adattarsi alla vita della comunità.
