New life for Beijing Hutong. Connecting yards : a hotel in former Siheyuan

Siheyuan and Hutong are quite appealing to the tourists as they are typical Beijing’s traditional residence. While in such an area, there are few hotels and none of them is well equipped or has the style. For now, most of tourists can only turn to other place to stay; therefore it is hard for them to have the feeling of living in the traditional district. Nowadays, the traditional districts are gradually ruined and local inhabitants are moving out of this area. These areas really need to be renovated to accept the tourists and also the locals. For the city and the citizens, the traditional residence and lifestyle should be revitalized to be experienced. The traditional Siheyuan is detached from surroundings, while we hope the hotel could be a continuous space to let the guests moving everywhere easily. So we break the original walls to connect them together and also add some blocks to enlarge the living space. At the same time, we notice that Mondrian’s paintings are close to our idea, so we arrange our plan referring to some of his paintings, such as Composition series and Broadway Boogie-Woogie.

I Siheyuan e gli Hutong richiamano i turisti in quanto sono le tipiche residenze tradizionali di Pechino. In questa zona, ci sono pochi alberghi e nessuno di loro è bene attrezzato o ha uno stile definito. Per ora, la maggior parte dei turisti può solo rivolgersi ad un altro luogo per soggiornare: è difficile avere la sensazione di vivere nel quartiere tradizionale. Oggi, i quartieri tradizionali sono in rovina e gli abitanti del luogo si stanno allontanando da questa zona. Queste aree hanno bisogno di essere ristrutturate per accogliere i turisti e anche i residenti locali. Per la città e i cittadini, la residenza e lo stile di vita tradizionali dovrebbero essere una rinascita di cui essere orgogliosi. Il Siheyuan tradizionale è staccato dall'ambiente circostante, mentre speriamo che l'hotel possa essere uno spazio continuo per lasciare che gli ospiti si possano muovere dovunque. Quindi abbiamo aperto le pareti originali per collegarle e e abbiamo aggiunto alcuni blocchi per ingrandire lo spazio abitabile. Allo stesso tempo, abbiamo che i dipinti di Mondrian sono vicini alla nostra idea compositiva, quindi abbiamo organizzato il nostro piano per alcuni dei suoi dipinti, come la serie Composition e Broadway Boogie-Woogie.
