Berlin is a city of voids – full of vacant lands and abandoned buildings. In the long term these areas are potentially interesting urban development sites, but the realisation of such large – scale projects typically takes a large amount of time, which leads to the area being unused for a long period. The presence of vacant lots can create a negative impact on the neighborhood. With Berlin’s cultural and social background, a new urban strategy – called ‘Zwischennutzung’ – was born. This term roughly translates to ‘Temporary Use’, describing a strategy where a vacant site is rented for a limited period of time and given a new purpose for local people. This way, the aforementioned negative impact can be avoided. This master’s thesis aims at explaining the important role of temporary use for sites where the future is uncertain. For a case study , the large- scale urban development Mediaspree is chosen. Future projects of the area got protested because of the privatization of the riverside. As a design strategy while preserving the existing temporary use, slow growth is aimed at on the site with soft reuse scenarios.

Abstract
As a design strategy while preserving the existing temporary use, slow growth is aimed at on the site with soft reuse scenarios.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
