Caserma Garibaldi. Progetto di riuso e nuova biblioteca a Varese

Located along the ancient road to Milan, the former Caserma Garibaldi in Varese is a nineteenth-century artifact with a planimetric scheme characterized by formal simplicity. The project examines the barracks on the basis of historical and social analyzes, that highlight its vital past, linked to the activities of the Market Square, now the Piazza della Repubblica, with cattle trade and the presence of inns. The peculiarities of the project area are located in its location close to the city center, within walking distance, in the presence of the University of the Insubria, a few hundred meters away, and being served by the railway stations. In recent times Varese has developed as a university center and an increasing number of students come to town from the provinces. This new vocation has also highlighted new needs, including the need for study classrooms and places of hospitality. An element of interest for design purposes was also the presence of the Apolloni Theater which was decided to relate to the functions hosted within the barracks so as to realize the mixité necessary for the rebirth of this city song. The design choice is to maintain the typology of the barracks as a coordinating element of the urban context in which it is inserted, by means of restoration based on conservative criteria. We want to bring back this part of town by introducing cultural functions into the building. Temporary residences for artists are foreseen, which will have at disposal both workshops for the realization of artistic works and spaces of residence. The new edifice develops a multifunctional building that mainly houses the library, but also offices, a restaurant and exhibition spaces This new building is conceived as a stand-alone presence in dialogue with the existing one through the search for a language that wants to resonate with the rhythms of the regular partitions of both the spaces and facades of the barracks.

ABSTRACT Sita lungo l'antica via per Milano, la ex-Caserma Garibaldi di Varese è un manufatto ottocentesco con schema planimetrico caratterizzato da semplicità formale. Il progetto prende in esame la caserma sulla base di analisi storiche e sociali che mettono in luce il suo passato vitale, legato alle attività della piazza del Mercato, ora piazza della Repubblica, con il commercio dei bovini e la presenza di locande. Le peculiarità dell'area di progetto si individuano nella sua posizione prossima al centro cittadino, raggiungibile a piedi, nella presenza dell'Università degli Studi dell'Insubria a poche centinaia di metri e nell'essere servita dalle stazioni ferroviarie. In epoca recente Varese si è sviluppata come centro Universitario e un numero sempre più importante di studenti arriva in città dalle province. Questa sua nuova vocazione ha messo in luce anche nuove esigenze, tra cui la principale è la necessità di aule studio e luoghi di accoglienza. Elemento di interesse ai fini progettuali è stata anche la presenza del Teatro Apollonio che si è deciso di mettere in relazione con le funzioni ospitate all'interno della caserma così da realizzare la mixitè necessaria alla rinascita di questo brano di città. La scelta progettuale è di mantenimento dell'impianto tipologico della caserma come elemento ordinatore del contesto urbano in cui è inserita, mediante ristrutturazione orientata a criteri di tipo conservativo. Si vuole riportare la frequentazione di questa parte di città introducendo nell'edificio funzioni culturali. Si prevedono residenze temporanee per artisti, che avranno a disposizione sia laboratori per la realizzazione di opere artistiche che spazi di residenza. La parte di nuova edificazione elabora un edificio multifunzione che ospita prevalentemente la biblioteca ma anche uffici, un ristorante e spazi espositivi. Questo nuovo edificio è concepito come presenza a se stante in dialogo con l'esistente grazie alla ricerca di un linguaggio che vuole entrare in risonanza con i ritmi delle partizioni regolari sia degli spazi che delle facciate della caserma.
