Medium voltage capacitors generate considerable transients during switching. Such transients produce inrush currents and overvoltages, which are harmful to installations and can trigger protection trips. This thesis aims to research mainly on three methods of capacitive switching: detuned reactor, pre-insertion resistor and synchronous switching, simulating and comparing the effectiveness of each method. Comparison results show that synchronous switching can achieve better results in suppressing inrush current, both in amplitude and transient time. Up to the maximum considered delay (0.1ms), the peak transient voltage is lower than with the other considered methods.

Abstract
Medium voltage capacitors generate considerable transients during switching. Such transients produce inrush currents and overvoltages, which are harmful to installations and can trigger protection trips. This thesis aims to research mainly on three methods of capacitive switching: detuned reactor, pre-insertion resistor and synchronous switching, simulating and comparing the effectiveness of each method. Comparison results show that synchronous switching can achieve better results in suppressing inrush current, both in amplitude and transient time. Up to the maximum considered delay (0.1ms), the peak transient voltage is lower than with the other considered methods.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
