Green healing architecture. Growth hypotheses for a healthcare resort

This paper is focused on the integration of Green in the architecture of Healthcare buildings. The main objective of this paper is discuss and analyse how to integrate green in healthcare buildings and result in producing a Healing Sustainable Architecture. The Integration of green is here pursued in the two forms of Nature and sustainability. Integrating Nature with Engineering may indeed produce a new modern form of Architecture, which may have possible benefits for healing process and which may turn out related to Nature much more tightly than customary. The Hospital, which is the place where the diseases should be killed, unfortunately it turns sometimes into a source for disease transfer, this is in spite of the fact that many precautions are taken in most hospitals. The topical point is not only about physical disease but also that ordinary hospital isn’t usually helpful for what regards the emotional dimension, which is of fundamental importance as well for healing. Examining the healing process, we will find that the psychological treatment is a main way in treatment, just exactly as taking a placebo. Medical researches prove its importance in the healing process. The process of designing a healthcare facility supported with green architectural concepts, and integrating nature which may bring the added benefit of returning the healthcare building to its original, archetypical form, where the healing process was just depending on nature, without artificial factors. After the industrialization and the advent of modern architecture, hospitals and healthcare building started to become, under certain aspects, like human factories. The concept to which the thesis aims to work at is that humans should be dealt with – and healed – as nature requires, and possibly in an environment related to nature. The more the building is related to nature, the more the architecture will be a healing architecture. The ultimate and practical goal of the work is not just designing a green building from the LEED’s certification point of view, but to design a beautiful place which can make people get and feel better. Overall, what the thesis is about is not just a building or a facility, but a whole integrated project, divided into layers and sectors so as to work with a least and a maximum size. The underlying idea is, moreover, a whole Healing village, not just a building. A village related to nature where the patients get cured in relation to nature, where the food comes from the nature around and everything is integrated. In the end, the objective is that the patient not only gets cured, but has a very positive experience in order to stand and get stronger and become more involved in his or her own destiny. An inspiration for the thesis is the Concept of Regen Villages, which is an idea by Prof James Ehlich from Stanford university, which has taken shape in a design by the EFFEKT the Danish design studio, an idea to be implemented first in Holland and then in different countries in Europe; an idea of a wholesome village, totally independent and sustainable. The aim of the thesis is to implement a similar idea of village, but in a healthcare context; a healing village, a healing integral architecture. An architecture capable of helping the patients to improve their health faster and better by immersing them in a healing place, so as to start virtuous healing loops and processes.

Questo documento è incentrato sull'integrazione di Green nell'architettura degli edifici sanitari. L'obiettivo principale di questo documento è discutere e analizzare come integrare il verde negli edifici sanitari e provocare la produzione di una Architettura sostenibile di guarigione. L'integrazione del verde avviene qui nelle due forme di natura e sostenibilità. L'integrazione della natura con l'ingegneria può infatti produrre una nuova forma moderna di Architettura, che può avere possibili benefici per il processo di guarigione e che possono risultare correlati alla natura molto più strettamente che abitualmente. L'ospedale, che è il luogo dove le malattie dovrebbero essere uccise, purtroppo si trasforma a volte in una fonte per il trasferimento di malattie, nonostante il fatto che molte precauzioni sono prese nella maggior parte degli ospedali. Il punto attuale non riguarda solo la malattia fisica, ma anche quello ospedale ordinario non è di solito utile per ciò che riguarda la dimensione emotiva, che è di fondamentale importanza anche per la guarigione. Esaminando il processo di guarigione, troveremo che il trattamento psicologico è un modo principale nel trattamento, proprio come prendere un placebo. Le ricerche mediche dimostrano la sua importanza nel processo di guarigione. Il processo di progettazione di una struttura sanitaria sostenuta da concetti architettonici verdi e l'integrazione della natura, che può portare il vantaggio aggiunto di restituire l'edificio sanitario alla sua forma originale e archetipica, dove il processo di guarigione era solo a seconda della natura, senza fattori artificiali. Dopo l'industrializzazione e l'avvento dell'architettura moderna, gli ospedali e l'edilizia sanitaria cominciarono a diventare, sotto certi aspetti, come le fabbriche umane. Il concetto a cui la tesi ha l'obiettivo di lavorare è che gli esseri umani debbano essere trattati - e guariti - come la natura richiede e possibilmente in un ambiente connesso alla natura. Più l'edificio è legato alla natura, più l'architettura sarà un'architettura curativa. L'obiettivo ultimo e pratico del lavoro non è solo quello di progettare un edificio verde dal punto di vista della certificazione LEED, ma di progettare un posto bellissimo che possa far sentire e sentire meglio le persone. Nel complesso, ciò che riguarda la tesi non è solo un edificio o una struttura, ma un intero progetto integrato, diviso in strati e settori in modo da lavorare con una dimensione minima e massima. L'idea sottostante è, inoltre, un intero villaggio di guarigione, non solo un edificio. Un villaggio legato alla natura dove i pazienti si guariscono in relazione alla natura, dove il cibo viene dalla natura in giro e tutto è integrato. Alla fine, l'obiettivo è che il paziente non solo si guarisce, ma ha un'esperienza molto positiva per stare e ottenere più forte e diventare più coinvolti nel proprio destino. Un'inspirazione per la tesi è il concetto di Regen Villages, che è un'idea del prof. James Ehlich dell'Università di Stanford, che ha preso forma in un progetto dello studio EFFEKT di design danese, un'idea da realizzare in primo luogo in Olanda e poi in Paesi diversi in Europa; Un'idea di un villaggio sano, totalmente indipendente e sostenibile. L'obiettivo della tesi è quello di attuare un'idea simile di villaggio, ma in un contesto sanitario; Un villaggio di guarigione, un'architettura integrale curativa. Un'architettura in grado di aiutare i pazienti a migliorare la loro salute in modo più rapido e migliore immersing loro in un luogo di guarigione, in modo da avviare virtuosi cicli di guarigione e processi.
