The study of retractable balconies was born as an attempt to respond to some lacks in existing building assets. The huge amount of existing buildings that need renovation and modification works as only alternatives to demolition, in the general European context and in the specific Italian one, necessarily leads to deal with the theme of refurbishment, still present and constantly developing. A first phase of the thesis was dedicated to the research of main existing building designs lacks, especially regarding the Italian context and the housing field. According to the sparks brought up from the first steps of the thesis and the self-interest, the focus shifted to the study of the dynamic façade topic, first investigating devices which are already issued in the technical literature and then exploring the latest prototypes and solutions. After that, the choice was to study a kind of dynamic balconies which create ledges and walkable areas not existing before. In addiction, this solution enables a natural change in the volumes on the façade and the consequent dynamic shadow effects. Furthermore this solution gives the chance to add more value to the existing loggias because it can transform a winter hot-house into a wide summer patio doubling the size of the previous area. The study presented in this thesis led to design a functioning prototype, applicable in many cases of existing buildings. It involved a strong integrated design work of both building and mechanical topics, in order to achieve the dynamic movement of that specific kind of balcony as well as the possibility for the user to control it.

Abstract
It involved a strong integrated design work of both building and mechanical topics, in order to achieve the dynamic movement of that specific kind of balcony as well as the possibility for the user to control it.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
