Nowadays most of the firms relied mostly on suppliers for new product development (NPD) activities in order to maintain their competitive advantage in terms of price, quality, delivery to the market etc. Even if the study of supplier involvement in NPD has been discussed extensively, the topic still continues to grow and this area of research is far from being abandoned. Suppliers provide new technology to firms and are important in firm’s NPD, nevertheless, it is not sufficient for firms to select the most appropriate technology but also select the most appropriate supplier. The main objective of the thesis is to identify the most important criteria used in the process of selecting innovative supplier for NPD and explore the supplier driven innovation in NPD project based on supplier firm relationship. This research is based on case research method, where two NPD projects have been studied. The projects selected for the study were believed to be rich in information about the process of supplier selection. Both the firms selected for the study was from Valve manufacturing industry. For the purpose of data collection interviews were conducted and also some data were taken from firm’s websites and internal & external documents. The data gathered was analyzed for both firms and within-case analysis as well as cross-case analysis were performed. With our analysis, the impact of supplier performance on the NPD project of both the firms with several important results are achieved, especially regarding the firm’s enhancement due to supplier-firm relationship with the selected suppliers. This research work highlights the most important criteria for traditional and innovative supplier selection in NPD. By identifying the important criteria for firms looking for early supplier involvement these firms can be prepared upfront, and perform better than their competitors in selecting the suppliers.
