The spread of awareness of sustainability issues worldwide has led to increasing pressures on companies to report non-financial information, and to be accountable for the impacts posed by all the players along their supply chains. This, in turn, gave rise to a movement of sustainability reporting and an evolution in the management of sub-tier suppliers. One of the recent trends that this progression of events has led to, is the emergence of Supplier Sustainability Assessment Software, which are third-parties to which information collection on suppliers’ environmental, social and ethical performance is outsourced. The aims of this study were to benchmark platforms offering supplier sustainability assessment services, taking as a benchmark one such platform, Aperitas—a Danish provider of a supplier sustainability assessment software, and using the insights it offers to compare it along with several players in the industry that range in size and expertise, and to analyze what the current companies operating in this market are doing in pursuit of increasing transparency and guaranteeing the obtaining of accurate, credible information. The main research questions were therefore, “What do Supplier CSR Data Management Tools currently present in the market offer?” and “What measures are taken to ensure data accuracy on these platforms? Do they help shrink the “credibility gap”?”. The results of the benchmarking identified a divide between strategies taken by platforms in terms of user friendliness, where some opted for simplistic user interfaces and no training, while others offered complex platforms along with comprehensive training courses for user. Another observation was different levels of data customization during the collection phase, with some platforms considering factors like industry and region while others comply by customer request. Another point of differentiation among platforms was their stance on data validation, with some focusing on supporting documents and avoiding audits—the main reason being keeping the service affordable for smaller companies, and others conducting audits for their platform customers as a part of the package. This also relates to their pricing strategies and target customers, with companies offering an affordable service being less likely to perform audits and more likely to have customers who are SMEs, unlike larger firms who target MNCs and charge a considerably higher subscription fee. The results of the benchmarking were then used to develop a 3-D Matrix that aims to help buyers choose the right sustainability management software according to their needs, their size and financial resources.
