The world “museum” refers to a group of heterogeneous institutions, which can be different in terms of typologies and governance (e.g. public museums, private museums, foundations...). Just as much as museums can be of different types, also the objectives pursued by these institutions are various. This thesis starts from the analysis of how the museums’ mission and role has modified and enlarged during the years, and how, consequently, the tools used to measure their performances have changed. After the initial phase of review of the literature on the themes of museums’ mission and performance measurement, having spot some relevant gaps, we will move to the part where we propose our solution. Indeed, the final aim of this work is to develop a comprehensive tool for performance measurement for museums, which allows to identify and evaluate the different dimensions which constitute the museums mission. And, furthermore, to provide a tool which could be adopted and used in all the different museum typologies by directors, professionals and in general by all the stakeholders. After the formulation of the model, we will show how it has been applied in real contexts: for this phase of application we relied on the valuable collaboration of three Italian museums, which have been available to participate to the testing of our model. The satisfying results we obtained in the real applications of the model will demonstrate how the tool can be adopted by museums’ directors and all the stakeholders in real contexts, and does not represent only a theoretical tool which can fill one gap in the academic literature.

Abstract
The satisfying results we obtained in the real applications of the model will demonstrate how the tool can be adopted by museums’ directors and all the stakeholders in real contexts, and does not represent only a theoretical tool which can fill one gap in the academic literature.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
