Abstract

The research stands for the development of solutions striving for a comprehensive approach, analysis and design of urban transformation from a spatial, and social point of view, pursuing this approach along two lines. At rst, a massive re-organization of car ows would provide to connect those part of the urban territory which the infrastructure has divided. By giving part of the existing lanes to the di erent local ows, such as cars, bicycles, pedestrians, motorcycles, heavy-freight, self-driving, etc. Part of the existing highway from regional shifts to local, infra becomes Intra-structure both in the sense of a downgrade action as a connecting system, and at the same time from mono-functional upgraded to multiple users. Indeed, formerly built to organize regional tra c for one type of mobility, nowadays highways should provide for functionalities which enable the presence of o plurality of di erent users. Furthermore, the present work aims to unlock the potential qualities behind unoccupied spaces along the highways and railways, as part of broader strategy of urban rede nition, and to recreate spatial connection both for cars, at the street level, and pedestrians, at the ground level. A process of actions staggered over the time would accomodate the design guidelines. Considering the high level of accessibility to the transportation system, and the proximity to the main commercial activities, those spaces host a huge potential both in spatial and social terms. The functional reprogramming of the voids within the interchange points, and nodes between infrastructures is here proposed as a way to nd new social contexts, as capable of triggering complex and unpredictable urban e ects in excess of its design capacity. Several interventions which due to the linear connections, and the widespread presence of infrastructures, a empt to de ne a framework of development for the whole urban system. The present work aims to embrace the complexity of its task, and to think in possibilities rather than in solutions. This is here intended as part of an open-minded approach to exibility, and collaboration: not as a linear rather as a cyclic process which provides for the re-evaluation of design directions after deep assessments have been made, and for new choices based on this knowledge. As a complex research topic, many questions need to be addressed, and many disciplines and gures need to be involved. Not only spatial design disciplines such as tra c engineering, civil engineering, geo-technology and construction, rather planning, economy and sociology would give a fundamental contribution for the assessment of the results. Infrastructure is here rede ned in its symbolic value as expression of the contemporary dynamicity, and space of collectiveness.
