Industry 4.0 is the name of the digitization process characterized by the application of new digital technologies in the industrial and manufacturing sector. The focal point of this phenomenon is represented by technologies divided into two large sets: the world of Information Technology (Industrial Internet of Things, Industrial Analytics and Cloud Manufacturing) and the world of Operational Technologies (Additive Manufacturing, Advanced Automation and Advanced Human Machine Interface). Industry 4.0 is producing a profound change, both at the factory level and at the cultural level, and in this perspective, the paper focuses on the industrial situation in Italy, on the assessment of the companies placement in the automation path and on the understanding how Italian companies are tackling the issue. With these goals, interviews were conducted with a sample of manufacturing companies in various sectors and important experiences and application cases of projects 4.0 were collected. The analysis of each technology compared to the progress of the project and a summary of its impact on the various business processes are presented in the elaboration. The achievable goals and benefits, the barriers and criticalities related to the projects implementation, and the main impacts on the level of structural organization and skills required are also highlighted. Research has undoubtedly revealed a good level of knowledge and application of the subject and a real awareness of the potentialities of the phenomenon, thanks also to the institutions that have proposed essential actions (Calenda Plan) to encourage companies in this process. Certainly, there are still many obstacles to overcome that concern specific norms and definition of standards, internal resistances and customer perception; however, it is finally beginning to perceive Industry 4.0 as differential factor in market competitiveness.

Abstract
Certainly, there are still many obstacles to overcome that concern specific norms and definition of standards, internal resistances and customer perception; however, it is finally beginning to perceive Industry 4.0 as differential factor in market competitiveness.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
