The in-between space

Between the River and the city exists a web of physical and metaphysical barriers. These layers composed of infrastructural lanes, incompatible space zoning are coupled with the natural phenomenon of flooding to form a series of barriers between the river Po and the city of Piacenza. This buffer is also reinforced by the ancient perception of the river as an edge between the Lombardia and Emilia Romagna region. This network of buffers has led to the slow but steady demise of the Rive Po as a place in Piacenza. The project strives to bridge the gap between the river and the city in two major ways: •Redefining the role of the River Po, as a place rather than an edge; •To imbue the river valley with a double role of recreation and infrastructure; The design of the landscape is one that identifies specific urban tissue that create gaps within the buffers; opportunities to reach the river. The concept strives to strategically fill these ‘in between spaces’ with a series of activity hubs that form a network of gradual transitions and magnets that announce the river and draw the people to its banks. The project further explores the idea of the ‘In Between space’ through the Visitors center, a river node on the proposed strategic master plan for this part of Piacenza. This Center is situated within one of the buffer zones, at a vantage point that allows for a program that can transform this space into a threshold and a point of contact between the people and the river. The building is thus read as an element of the landscape, capable of translating the values of the urban, industrial, agrarian and riparian context with in which it lays.

Tra il fiume e la città è un netto di barriere fisiche e metafisiche. Questi strati composti da corsie infrastrutturali, zonizzazione spaziale incompatibile, sono accoppiati con il fenomeno naturale delle inondazioni per formare una serie di barriere tra il fiume Po e la città di Piacenza. Questo tampone è anche rafforzato dall'antica percezione del fiume come un margine tra la Lombardia e l'Emilia Romagna. Questa rete di tamponi ha portato alla lenta ma costante scomparsa del Rive Po come luogo di Piacenza. Il progetto cerca di colmare il divario tra il fiume e la città in due modi principali: • ridefinire il ruolo del fiume Po come luogo anziché un bordo; • Questa è la valle del fiume con un doppio ruolo di ricreazione e infrastrutture; Il disegno del paesaggio è quello che identifica un tessuto urbano specifico che crea lacune all'interno dei tamponi; Possibilità di raggiungere il fiume. Il concetto si sforza di riempire strategicamente questi "tra spazi" con una serie di hub di attività che formano una rete di transizione graduale e di magneti che annunciano il fiume e disegnano le persone alle banche. Il progetto esplora ulteriormente l'idea del "In Space" attraverso il Centro Visitatori, un nodo fiume sul piano strategico proposto per questa parte di Piacenza. Questo centro si trova all'interno di una delle zone di buffer, in un punto di vista che consente un programma che può trasformare questo spazio in una soglia e un punto di contatto tra la gente e il fiume. L'edificio è quindi letto come un elemento del paesaggio, capace di tradurre i valori del contesto urbano, industriale, agrario e ripariano con il quale si trova.
