This Thesis explores the social phenomenon of the Chinese young community that now, more than ever expresses itself in many ways using different online and offline channels. With the opening of the country, during the 80s, millennial have been, in fact, the slice of society effected the most by the western culture. Influences have caused many changes in peoples’ lifestyle and behavior, and the most relevant among many, music as individual self-expression. Considering the history and current effects that music has on people, and mostly young generations, Rap is still nowadays one of the most powerful tools of the individual’s manifestation. Despite the fast spread of the Hip Hop culture in the country, the Chinese society and music industry is still not prepared nor ready to embrace this genre of music and invest in it, and because of this the artist struggles. The studies of this thesis explore the millennials’ Chinese context and how this decade became a prolific environment for people to develop their individuality, expressing and promoting themselves. In order to have a clear understanding of Chinese people behaviors, the research considers also how this phenomenon has effected the way big corporations communicate with young people and design innovating brand experiences. Simultaneously the author reflects on the origin of the Hip Hop culture and the deep meanings and values that this music has on society. From its origin in the 70s until today, the author wants to capture and rework on the perception that Rap has on nowadays society. Using a Design Thinking Method of research and decontextualizing the subject from its usual environment, Rap is reconsidered far from his underground and usual networking system and brought it alive with consciousness and social purpose. With case studies happening all over the world, the author wants to highlight the educational and instructive benefits that Rap can have on anyone, Hip Hop lover or not. The author will be specifically focused on the revaluation of the Conscious Rap’s thematic, the rapper and the relation that he has with his peers and the community. Thanks to an on-desk research, open to a national and international scale, the author has been able to understand the main principles related to the general topic. Consequently, surveys, interviews and in-depth on-field research (on a smaller scale of the City of Shanghai), allowed to define the main actors and channels related to the specific work field. Finally, the prototype and testing of ideas with students and artists highlighted insight and comments necessary to define the final design content and experience of the final service output. As a response to the study, the thesis designs an innovating and alternative network system that aims to create a Rap community network driven to inspire people, discuss social issues and reconnect the Hip Hop community to the Chinese society.
