Prison design. Proposal for new prison in Kragujevac, Serbia

This thesis is a research and proposal for new architectural typology of incarceration facility. It is a very inconvenient situation for architect to design such facility. A prison must respond to the demand for discipline and freedom at the same time. Prison design brings to table a lot of paradox problems. With new design architecture will be reclaim role in multiplying possibilities as opposed to limiting them. In further text it will be briefly shown how historically prison typology has developed with examples of prisons. Each prison represents historical model of its time and different approach to prison design at that time. Also there will be also shown some of representative examples of contemporary design. These examples are showing excellent stats in improving prisoner’s behavior and rehabilitation. It will be also explained how does one prison facility function and what are its requirements. This will help reader to understand projects better and connect the dots of complex design. Taking in consideration these requirements and experiences of different examples of prison design and other similar totalitarian facilities, design for new prison will be given. Finally the booklet will concentrate on location itself. Site for a new proposal of prison design is located in central Serbia. It will consider Serbia’s justice system and its most known prison facilities. New proposal will be follow by explanation of surroundings and prison stats about existing issues of prisons in Serbia. Prison proposal will be using new design to blur the line of prison parameter. New design will include outside community to prison facility. Idea is to bring these two communities more closely on a way that benefits to inmates and outside community. Inmates will feel less isolated and included in everyday life but still under secured parameter, and for local citizens there will be more feature content.
