Navigare il Tevere. Variazioni architettoniche tra disegno e rigenerazione fluviale

The Theme upon which the thesis takes it basis in the competition call: “Roma 21st Century River Renaissance. Reconnecting the Eternal City with its Tiber River through design…” issued by Eleven Magazine. This competition aims to redevelop Tevere River as a new Landmark for Rome, thus creating a tight bond between the modern layer and the Eternal city, using the waterway as the reconnection element. The river, which was deprived of its original functions throughout the centuries, nowadays is perceived as a cut within the city, sewed up by the bridges that cross it, and as a source of degradation both environmental and social, with neglected banks which are also difficult to reach. The relation between the city and the river is not well-perceived in different spots along its path: in the very center of the city the difference in height between the river and the city itself creates a distance, both visual and physical, while in the fringe areas the gap is stressed by fenced private areas, highways or abandoned green spaces. Lots of cities focused in re-creating a new bond with their rivers, through the establishment of specific plans: facilitating the passage of the water, re-organizing the rim areas thus granting the public use and the pedestrian transit, also introducing support functions. Therefore the water turns to be an asset in the valorization of the Genius Loci, also setting the basis for a further urban development related to a lots of features of the city life, such as transportation, leisure time and tourism. Thesis proposes to reuse the Tevere thanks to the creation of a urban sustainable transportation system devoted to touristic purposes, placing along the watercourse, punctual elements, working as river station, valorizing the river as a connection element which guides the traveler throughout the roman heritage.

Il tema della tesi pone le sue basi dalla proposta del bando di concorso intitolato: “Roma 21st Century River Renaissance. Reconnecting the Eternal City with its Tiber River through design…” ideato da Eleven Magazine. Il concorso proponeva la riqualificazione del fiume Tevere come nuovo punto di riferimento per Roma, creando un rapporto tra lo strato contemporaneo e la città eterna, utilizzando il corso d’acqua come elemento di ricongiunzione. Il fiume, ormai privato delle sue funzioni originali, oggi viene percepito come un taglio all’interno della città, ricucito dai ponti che l’attraversano, fonte di episodi di degrado, ambientale e sociale, con rive trascurate e difficili da raggiungere. La relazione con il fiume è poco percepita in diversi punti del suo tracciato: in centro la differenza di quota tra il fiume e la città crea un distacco sia fisico sia visivo mentre nelle aree periferiche, la divisione è creata da recinzioni di spazi privati, da strade a scorrimento veloce o l’abbandono di zone verdi. Sono molte le città che si sono impegnate a ricostruire un nuovo legame con il fiume attraverso la dotazione di piani specifici, favorendo l’accesso all’acqua, riorganizzando le zone di bordo e garantendo l’uso pubblico e la percorribilità pedonale, introducendo attività di supporto. L’acqua diventa così una risorsa per la valorizzazione dell’identità del luogo, costituendo anche un’opportunità per lo sviluppo urbano in relazione a vari aspetti di vita come il trasporto, il tempo libero e il turismo. La tesi si ripropone di riutilizzare il fiume tramite la creazione di un trasporto urbano sostenibile a scopi turistici, inserendo lungo il fiume progetti puntuali, delle stazioni fluviali, valorizzando il fiume come elemento conduttore che guida il visitatore all’interno del patrimonio romano.
