A new life for Politeama. Modern lifestyle oriented theatre transformation

Located in Como, Italy, Politeama is a historic abandoned theatre. This reconstruction project is aimed to bring it to life and make it attractive as not only a theatre but also a community center for the locals. With the benefit of historical research and with technical expertise it was decided that most spatial and functional design concept of the building would follow the initial project. The new design follows two directions: firstly, to evoke the recent tragic history of the building and secondly, to create a flexible interior and exterior space that can easily be adapted to the needs of the community that it serves. The main completed works comprise the following: Structural consolidation of the building and attached new functions; Replanning of the visiting routes; Refurbishment of the exterior surface and the renovation of the main entrances; Introduction of new technological system to enable flexible stage and auditorium; Landscaping and refurbishment of the courtyard. Manifesting itself as a new living organism in the cityscape, the design responds to surrounding environments and local history, balancing the functional requirements of theatre and the needs of a community centre.

Situato a Como, in Italia, Politeama è un teatro storico abbandonato. Questo progetto di ricostruzione ha lo scopo di farlo vivere e renderlo attraente come non un teatro ma anche un centro di comunità per i locali. Con il vantaggio della ricerca storica e con l'esperienza tecnica è stato deciso che la maggior parte del concetto di progettazione spaziale e funzionale dell'edificio seguirebbe il progetto iniziale. Il nuovo design segue due direzioni: in primo luogo, per evocare la recente storia tragica dell'edificio e, in secondo luogo, creare uno spazio flessibile interno e esterno che possa essere facilmente adattato alle esigenze della comunità che serve. Le principali opere complete comprendono: consolidamento strutturale dell'edificio e nuove funzioni collegate; Ripristino delle rotte di visita; Riqualificazione della superficie esterna e ristrutturazione degli ingressi principali; Introduzione di un nuovo sistema tecnologico per abilitare stage e auditorium flessibili; Landscaping e ristrutturazione del cortile. Manifestandosi come un nuovo organismo vivente nel paesaggio urbano, il design risponde agli ambienti circostanti e alla storia locale, bilanciando le esigenze funzionali del teatro e le esigenze di un centro comunitario.
