Dental drills, as other mechanical tools, are subjected to wear due to mechanical and thermal factors that occur during the bone drilling process. The increase of this phenomenon during drilling operations can lead to necrosis of bone which in turn leads to a loosening of the fixation of dental implant. Therefore, the goal of this experimentation was to analyze the dental tool wear through the evaluation of cutting forces, images of cutting edge and the use of algorithm, developed during a thesis work at the Politecnico di Milano, to compare different state of tool wear. All this was achieved by drilling holes in a custom polyurethane specimens. In order to do so, a machine was designed and built to have a reliable environment, which could guarantee the repeatability of the tests. Finally, a comparison between polyurethane and bovine bone was performed with the aim to evaluate the differences in terms of force and torque of the two different materials produced by the same machining process.
