In a period of instability of the Oil&Gas market and with the increase of competitivity of foreign competitors, that can reduce the strategic position of Italian EPC, the purpose of this study is to define guidelines to provide to the suppliers of Special Valves, Static Equipment and Switchgears, in order to improve their competitive position on the market. The information required are collected by means of interview to excellent companies belonging to one of each sector, that are called Best Performers. The status of Best Performer has been defined by the EPC clients. This research focuses on the analysis of the supply chain configuration of each company, trying to highlight which are the main elements that could be useful and replicable. These companies are interviewed about their supply chain configuration, whose information are gathered thanks to a theoretical framework, which has been defined with the literature, and further improved during the interviews. Through the research-based theory, it is possible to provide a theoretical lens that allow to identify the structure and the configuration of these suppliers, thus providing an insight in each of these sectors. It is important to describe the theoretical framework, that is basically composed by three blocks of elements: - Performance: contractor’s evaluation of suppliers; - Capabilities: firms’ abilities and skills that generate performance; - Practices: packages containing configuration actions that are bundled to obtain capabilities. The sample of firms is composed of 18 special valves, 12 static equipment and 9 switchgears suppliers. The interviews help understanding which are the practices and their combination that allow those companies to obtain competitive advantage to prevail over their competitors. The identification of these elements is made through the multi-case approach. In order to understand if the resource-based theory is adequate to describe the configurations through which those companies compete on market, an index is introduced, called “Similarity Index”, who provides how far each company is to the average behavior of its sector. This procedure allows the identification of “outliers”, that are the companies that behave in the most different way, respect to their sector. Their analysis allowed to understand the range of applicability of the resource-based theory to this study. The suppliers are then grouped under the contextual factor of the ETO (Engineer-to-Order), that helps providing a different point of view for the analysis of the companies, extended the results previously obtained.

Abstract
The suppliers are then grouped under the contextual factor of the ETO (Engineer-to-Order), that helps providing a different point of view for the analysis of the companies, extended the results previously obtained.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
