Urban regeneration has been more and more frequently adopted in the recent years when facing the rapidly growing urban problems. With the studies on global urban regeneration schemes, much attention has been given to the initial decision-making process and policies, along with the social-economical effects afterwards, but there is a lack of research on the strategies that have been implemented concerning urban design, such as the reorganization of urban fabric and redesign of public spaces. Points of view initiating from the urban design thinking and the quality of environmental design have always been a miss. Thus this research focus more on the less eye-catching elements concerning urban design, such as the public space system and pedestrian system. The cases from both cities are carefully selected as the most representative ones in these two cities or even across the world. The research aim is to explore how these urban regeneration projects finally become what we see today from the original context and situations, and more importantly, why. Through cases from Milan and Shanghai, two tremendous metropolis once met the urgent needs for regenerating city area and now experiencing more transformations, the research try to evaluate different strategies the developers and urban designers have adopted and the influences they have caused. By comparing these cases crossly based on an architecture and urban design background, several inspirations have emerged according to a deep acknowledgment of all the cases studied. Even though there are numerous differences between the two cities, it still could be detected that some of starting points of urban design strategies are universal and worth being learned to guide the future urban design directions for metropolis.

Abstract
Even though there are numerous differences between the two cities, it still could be detected that some of starting points of urban design strategies are universal and worth being learned to guide the future urban design directions for metropolis.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
