In the last years the manufacturing industry has been changing dramatically and Italy is no exception. The use of digital technologies in the industry is becoming more common in the industry changing it in different ways. This change is not without challenges and governments have been acting directly to affect the development of digital solution. In Italy, the government launched the so called piano Calenda to promote Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 is the name given to the trend occurring in the manufacturing industries related to the integration of digital technologies in every process of the company. This trend uses data and connectivity to improve not only efficiency but especially effectiveness, changing the shape of entire supply chain and offering to company the opportunity to offer new services. In Italy, this phenomenon is known by most of the companies, thanks also to the national program and by the initiatives of many research centres and companies, especially machine suppliers. The thesis tries to understand better the perspective on the Industry 4.0 by companies operating in Italy. First, a general perspective on the trend is presented by integrating different resource. Three main drivers have been identified: the economic background, the advancement in the technologies and the new value for customers. In the second part, the research has been limited to information technologies characterising Industry 4.0: cloud computing, Industrial Internet of Things and Industrial Analytics. After a literature review, for each technology the main characteristics, benefits and challenges are presented. In the last chapter case studies are presented. Those have been drafted after interviews with relevant manager of companies active in the Industry 4.0. This phenomenon was generally well known but the perspective of this industries was different for each company. Users of machine mainly aims to improve efficiency and productivity while suppliers want to offer new service and to find new way to increase the attractiveness of their products. The attention given to this phenomenon in Italy is increasing every day and it will shape the future of the industry.
Nell’ultimo capitolo vengono presentati i case studies.

Abstract
In the last years the manufacturing industry has been changing dramatically and Italy is no exception. The use of digital technologies in the industry is becoming more common in the industry changing it in different ways. This change is not without challenges and governments have been acting directly to affect the development of digital solution. In Italy, the government launched the so called piano Calenda to promote Industry 4.0.
