Smart manufacturing and lean organization : insights on touchpoints and synergies

Smart Manufacturing today is a very discussed topic, both by academics and inside the companies. Early researches about the new paradigm have already been carried out, enabling to precisely frame the phenomenon and classify it uniquely. Much less explored, however, is the potential link between Smart Manufacturing and Lean organization, a non-random link but a result of recurring analogies within companies based on an "agile" organizational model. The available literature concerning the industry 4.0 is growing and evolving more and more as time goes by, on the contrary there are few and sporadic contributions that focus on the link between the two paradigms mentioned above, our thesis focus. It opens with a 360-degree review of the available literature separately on Smart and Lean topics, followed by an excursus on current contributions regarding the link between the two. Classical organizational design theories allowed us to frame a solid interview protocol, thanks also to the important contribution given by the laboratory lead in 2017 by the CISL syndicate about the topic I4.0 (discussed extensively in the following chapters). Subsequently, we built our analysis according to a case-study research with a sample of four Italian companies, entering the I4.0 theme. The data collection is based on interviews carried out according to a questionnaire already structured along the lines of classical theories, which have proved to be an excellent organizational analysis tool for a preliminary analysis of the topic as ours. Obviously, the novelty of the theme leaves plenty of room for future analysis, such as extending the research abroad or a more deepened focus on change management (training, leadership, workers' commitment).

Lo Smart Manufacturing al giorno d’oggi è un tema molto discusso, sia dagli accademici che all’interno delle aziende. Sono già state svolte delle prime ricerche riguardanti il nuovo paradigma, permettendo di inquadrare precisamente il fenomeno e poterlo classificare in modo univoco. Molto meno esplorato invece è il potenziale legame esistente tra lo Smart manufacturing e la Lean organization, un legame non casuale ma frutto di analogie ricorrenti all’interno di aziende basate su di un modello organizzativo di tipo “agile”. La letteratura disponibile a riguardo all’industria 4.0 sta crescendo ed evolvendo sempre di più con il passare dei mesi, al contrario si riscontrano pochi e sporadici contributi che si focalizzino sul legame tra i due paradigmi menzionati sopra, focus della nostra tesi. Essa si apre con una revisione a trecentosessanta gradi della letteratura disponibile separatamente sullo Smart e sulla Lean, seguita da un excursus sui contributi attuali relativamente al legame intercorrente tra i due. Le teorie classiche di design organizzativo ci hanno permesso di strutturare un solido interview protocol, grazie anche all’importante contributo datoci dal laboratorio condotto nell’anno 2017 dal sindacato CISL sulla tematica I4.0 (discusso ampiamente nei seguenti capitoli). Successivamente abbiamo costruito la nostra analisi secondo una case-study research con un campione di quattro aziende italiane che si stanno addentrando nella tematica I4.0. La raccolta delle informazioni si basa su interviste svolte secondo un questionario già impostato a monte strutturato sulla falsariga di teorie classiche, che sono risultate essere un ottimo strumento di analisi organizzativa per un’analisi preliminare del tema come la nostra. Ovviamente, la novità del tema lascia ampio spazio per analisi future, come ad esempio l’estensione della ricerca all’estero o un focus più approfondito sulla tematica della gestione del cambiamento (training, leadership, workers’ commitment).
