Lean manufacturing and Industry 4.0 : an empirical analysis between sustaining and disruptive change

The term Industrie 4.0 was introduced in 2011 at the Hannover Messe, in Germany. Nowadays, this topic is considered an important opportunity for industrial businesses, that are trying to grab all the advantages that this transformation could bring. Manufacturing companies are trying to link Industry 4.0 with pre-existent business philosophies, such as Lean Manufacturing. However, studies about the relationships between Lean and Industry 4.0 are scarce and sometimes anecdotal. In particular, there is no a comprehensive framework explaining how Lean principles and pillars will be modified in the viewpoint of Industry 4.0, considering the essence inherent the two paradigms. Therefore, this proposed work aims at filling this gap by developing a normative model which links these two paradigms, going beyond the mere application of advanced technologies in a well-established Lean environment. The main idea behind is that Lean in the viewpoint of Industry 4.0 is composed of some principles and pillars that will be modified following a sustaining perspective (according to which Industry 4.0 complements and improves Lean practices) and some others following a disruptive one (according to which Industry 4.0 triggers radical changes).

Il termine Industrie 4.0 venne introdotto nel 2011 alla Hannover Messe, in Germania. Oggi, questo tema è considerato dalle industrie un’importante opportunità; esse stanno infatti cercando di cogliere tutti i vantaggi che questa trasformazione potrebbe portare. Le aziende manifatturiere stanno provando a collegare l’Industria 4.0 con pre-esistenti filosofie di business, come ad esempio la Lean Manufacturing. Tuttavia, le ricerche accademiche riguardo alla relazione tra Lean e Industria 4.0 sono scarse. In particolare, non esiste un framework completo che spieghi come i principi e i pilastri della Lean verranno modificati in ottica Industria 4.0, considerando l’essenza alla base dei due paradigmi. Perciò, il lavoro proposto ha l’obbiettivo di fornire un modello normativo che leghi questi due paradigmi, andando oltre la mera applicazione di tecnologie avanzate in un ambiente Lean già ben consolidato. L’idea principale risiede nel fatto che la Lean in ottica digitale (Industria 4.0) si componga di alcuni principi e pilastri che saranno modificati secondo una prospettiva sustaining (secondo cui l’Industria 4.0 complementa e migliora le Lean practices) e altri secondo una prospettiva disruptive (in cui l’Industria 4.0 porta a cambiamenti radicali).
