In this thesis, the application of Big Data analysis in the field of education will be introduced and discussed. The review will focus on the research community of Learning Analytics, describing the opportunities and the challenges of the techniques. The existing projects in this field will discuss and categorized, developing an original Classification Map. Then, the principles of Learning Analytics will be applied to an empirical project. Scuola in Chiaro is the Italian web-portal for school information, controlled directly by the Ministry of Education. Through the implementation of Google Analytics, it is available a huge database with information about the searches on the website and the habits of millions of users. The main aim of the research is to investigate the pattern of navigation of Scuola in Chiaro, finding useful insight about the school choice. The dataset will be analyzed through descriptive data analysis and data visualization. First, from the user point of view, the analysis of the pattern of navigation will try to understand how the information are consulted and how the users want to interact during their first contact with a school. Then, the performance of each school profile will be discussed, identifying the drivers and the characteristics of the schools that are influencing the traffic. The final chapter will discuss what are the managerial implication for school principals and policy makers.
In questa tesi, l’applicazione delle tecniche di Big Data analysis nel campo dell’educazione verrà brevemente introdotta e discussa. La review si concentrerà sulla comunità definita come Learning Analytics, descrivendo le principali opportunità e sfide che l’applicazione di queste tecniche comporta. I progetti esistenti in questo campo verrà presentati e categorizzati usando un innovativo strumento, la Mappa di Classificazione. In questo progetto, i principi di Learning Analytics verranno applicati ad un caso reale. Scuola in Chiaro è il portale italiano per le informazioni riguardo alle scuole, gestito direttamente dal Ministero dell’Istruzione. Grazie all’implementazione di Google Analytics, è disponibile un vastissimo dataset con informazione riguardo le ricerche e l’utilizzo del sito da parte di milioni di utenti. L’obiettivo principale di questo studio è di investigare il pattern di navigazione di Scuola in Chiaro, ricercando nuove ipotesi riguardo la scelta della scuola. Innanzitutto, nella User Analysis, il pattern comune di navigazione verrà evidenziato, cercando di capire quali informazioni gli utenti necessitano durante la scelta della scuola e in che modo vogliono interagire con il sito. In seguito, le performance del singolo profilo verranno discusse, identificando quali sono i driver e le caratteristiche della scuola che stanno influenzando il traffico. Infine, le implicazioni manageriali dell’analisi verranno brevemente discusse.
